From a Newbies perspective I think its a fantastic idea.I can understand the need for more entrys to keep it competitive though. Its a great way for those who cant attend a COG or other annual comp. RC

Thanks for all the comments folks.  I sent a message to Carolyn before I headed off for the weekend that we will keep on keeping on.  Yep, it's all for fun and thats how we should keep it.

LK, there is no reason whatsoever why you couldn't enter a recipe.  I for one, and I know there would be many others, would appreciate it.

Thinking fun and how to encourage all, including computer newbies to share their cooking ideas (with just knowing how to key letters and numbers, plus push the enter key),  I looked at the wording for requirements,

Wouldn't it be best to have this as a sticky????

Quote:
As there are many great and potentially great cooks on COCIA it has been suggested to me by Muzz (Sundryed) that we run several cooking competitions throughout 2009.  This will give an opportunity for everyone to show off their talents.

Muzz will be co-ordinating things.

It is proposed that we break it into categories and each category be run for a period of two months prior to judging.  For example – roasts, stews, deserts, breads etc.

There will be a prize awarded for the best of each category with a certificate also awarded for the best and runner up.

Recipes must be cooked in a camp oven or camp ovens and you may use whatever heat source you wish, e.g. Heat Beads, Coals, Gas.

Each category will be judged by two members of the forum who will not have entries in that category.

Entries are to be emailed to me (I will not be competing) and they will be posted them on the forum.  All entries will remain anonymous until the judging is complete.  This section will be locked for viewing only.  Members are not permitted to publicly comment on entries until after judging is complete.

Entries are to include the recipe, a written dialogue of the process and a minimum of four photos.

Judges will award points for each stage of the process as follows with a maximum of 50 points able to be awarded.

Photos must be presented in such a way that will enable judges to award points for each section and must not identify the originator of the recipe.  Photos must also show the camp oven for verification. Photos of the final presentation may include any trimmings considered necessary to show off your recipe at its best.

Recipe – 10 points
Prepared Recipe – 10
Cooked – 10 points
Final Presentation – 20 points

This is basically it in a nutshell. If you have any questions or do not fully understand anything please do not hesitate to post them up before we get under way.

Now, Here is my suggestion to change any of the words that might have made members 'doll things up' just because they could, but still scaring off those who haven't done anything like this before.

"Entries must have recipe with list of  ingredients, text giving steps to prepare dish, and at least 4 photos

Photos must show enough about the cooking steps and at least one way of serving that will let  judges decide on points for each section and must not identify who is competing.  Photos must also show the camp oven for verification. Photos of the final serving set up may include any trimmings considered necessary to show off your recipe at its best"

Anything that can say  KISS, or keep it simple I'd hope would say 'come one, join the fun'.

Again, having the requirements to compete as a sticky would help all find them and read them.

& to somewhere to say, all you need to do is be able to put what you have into an email to Derek, both the written part and the  photos.

====================
Also, for what it's worth, I long ago decided that I'm too much of a North American to submit any dishes to this competition.  So, I'm just reading for interest and I find what members enter very interesting.

Yes but this is a "Claytons" competition - just a bit of fun in this place.
I dont think we need to get too pedantic about this.
It is a fun thing and should continue.
We also learn a lot from the entries.

I couldnt agree more KD,,,,,it was meant to be fun from the start and shouldnt be taken to seriously. I think it just gives the regular contributors to this site another way to promote campoven cooking, swap recipes and maybe improve their photographic skills Grin.

Neither of us are good photographers but that hasn’t stoped us entering the comp, or putting up recipes. I don’t think special effects make any difference in the comp, all I have done is take the photos resize them and email them to you.
I don’t know how many photos we took of recipes that never made the grade in that last comp

I have to agree with JC on this,
I think that anyone (even with a cheap digital camera) should be able get photos good enough for this comp. I for one am no great photographer.......I Just do my best,... take heaps of photos and cull the really bad ones,
If people are not happy about added wording then that can be easily fixed,

My thoughts are that unless there are at least 6 entries and preferably 10 it should be discontinued.

On the previous occasion when I had to judge my main choice was by the written ingredients and how I felt they would taste. This is how I always choose recipes I try, by my mind rather than the look.  Tasting should be the main criteria for any kind of cooking but this is not possible in a virtual world.

I had some fun researching what to make and certainly vegetarian was a newie for me.  Good photos dont really mean the best recipe.  Different recipes need more photos to show how they are made and show the degree of difficulty which should also be taken into account.

Another idea would to have a "favourite dish of the COG" competition with everyone attending a COG nominating their favourite "tasted" dish.  All shared dishes could be photographed on a plate and it and the recipe put on the forum, along with the most popular. You only have to look at the Fraser Island photos to see that even at a small COG lots of dishes get tasted.

Derek, Bonnie and I haven’t been members to long, but the cooking comp is something Bonnie enjoys, plus the new recipes.

Neither of us are good photographers but that hasn’t stoped us entering the comp, or putting up recipes. I don’t think special effects make any difference in the comp, all I have done is take the photos resize them and email them to you.

I don’t know how many photos we took of recipes that never made the grade in that last comp, we thought that if you are going to enter a recipe, it should he edible and be repeatable by anyone else who cooks it.

Look

I am only a newbie.

I think it should go ahead. If you can cook, get a entry in. All this rubbish about text on pics and shadowing does not make a picture or a meal and I can tell you that I do not judge on the above.

Dont be scared. Cook and take a few snaps along the way.

When I look at the recipes section and I dont see any pics it does not inspire me at all to have a go.

I agree with Logfire. A competition which focus' solely on photos and the recipe is almost akin to judging a book by it's cover.
