I currntly toast with a chinese cheapy single and although loose on the hinges it cooks well. We are looking for a double and I have looked at the square rome pie irons but am not convinced by the larger size that will not always squish the edges and seal the jaffle (nothing worse than hot bake beans dropping in your lap).

What are peoples opinions, should I just get a $15 chinese double one like the trailblazer or whatever it is from Big W or go with a pieiron? I am not convininced by round ones as they seem to waste more bread so would rather stick with square.

A similar discussion to this has been had with camp ovens. Chinese cheapie versus custom made. At the end of the day they it is all in the cooking. Cheapies are good. Cool

I just got 2 rome irons from amazon, a double and a panini, very nice and the date amazon said they would be here was spot on.

I have two round rome pie irons

they seal very well , much better than square

my recommendation

The Panini works well, forget sealing edges, it makes a toasted sandwich inside the iron. Those oversize breads found in supermarkets fit perfectly. We use this one a lot when camping for breakfast, quite often on the 2 burner picnic stove. The square double is next best.
Agree with Burnsy about the waste of bread with a round iron but the Magpies do well out of it.

David, are you saying that the pieiron double does seal the edges (if so Iguess it would only seal on three sides) on the oversize loaves you get these days?

No, the Lawson's extra wide sliced bread sits inside the double or Panini. If you try some Turkish bread or similar you may get the sealed edges.

I ended up pickig up a second Chinese maker second hand with another CO so the two chinese ones will do for now.
