Have been hunting around for a heat bead cooker for the camp oven for times where I don't want to take a lot of gear or the Ozpig, that I could use in summer during firebans and caravan parks etc.

Trundled into BCF today and found what I was looking for as I don't have the time or tools to make 1 up myself.

It takes up to a 9qt oven with feet safely or a 4.5qt without feet and holds roughly upto 1kg of beads.

BCF have them for $100 with a 9qt oven or $40 (normally $60) without the oven for those that are interested.

BCF opened in Griffith NSW today.
They had heaps of these Heat Beads cookers for $60.
Anybody got a review or report on using it?

David.

I had a crack awhile back on 1 of mine, so far it seems to work fairly well but it was very controlled use (in the backyard lol) Just need to practise with beads for getting right temps Smiley

MikeO had one at the last COG at TBF's place.  He used it to cook a lamb dish.  Went well.  Don't think I got any pics of it though.

OzTrail also make (or copy?) these.
They make 2 sizes:
1) OZtrail COOKING BASE 20cm Steel For Most 4.5 Quart Camp Oven Part No. OZTOCWA-CB20-D
2) OZtrail COOKING BASE 27cm Steel For Most 9 Quart Camp Oven OZTOCWA-CB27-D

Refer this link: http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=oztrail+cooking+base&_sacat=0&_odkw=oztra...

Another option...

Take one old frypan from op shop, one trivet from BCF, one cooking base from Oztrail = Total about $25

Place trivet in frypan (to sit heatbeads on and maintain bottom ventilation),
place cooking base on top of trivet (to sit camp oven on without suffocating top of heat beads

Voila!  Multi-use version of the camp oven cooker   Smiley

My chief has also bolted a cooking base type frame onto the bottom of the frypan so it can't burn whatever it is sitting on.

The judge's decision is final... unless the 3rd umpire is called for... or a facebook campaign goes viral !!!
