Just putting the feelers out for now.
If I was to suggest Silverton NSW for a COG who would be interested?
No dates yet. But it will need to be in the winter months.
Maybe next year?
The place I had in mind is Penrose Park.

I wouldn't say no but because of location maybe set the date for next year pretty soon and then people can try and work it in.

It can be bloody cold and windy there in winter, maybe spring or autumn might be better?

Been in touch with Penrose Park and no problems with campfires. Camping is $10 a head and power is $5 per site per night extra.
I'm thinking September 2017
So lets hear dates available not available to everyone.

September is going to be nearly always out for me, busy time of the year with work.
So are we going to call this the "Saltbush Cog"? Being his old stomping ground and all.  Smiley

Tis around 1500 klm for us to get to Silverton and I imagine similar for a few others so would be nice of we could co-ordinate it so as many as possible can attend.

What about August 2017?
Yes 1,500ks is a long way for the east coast members to come.
But I drove a bit over 1,500ks to get to Broke. (well worth it)
What about the other SA. members anyone thinking about it?

We will be in a Silverton Cog anytime.

August is OK by us. June has less rainfall, but a couple of degrees cooler.

Derek do we need to set a date at this stage? Or can we let it ride a bit longer?
Made a couple of phone calls. The manager at Penrose Park sells firewood for $12 a bag. Or a wood supplier on Broken Hill will deliver a trailer load to Silverton for about $120-130.

I'm interested in attending a COG one day but a quick look on google maps puts me at 2655km away from Silverton. Bit far for me unfortunately with a couple of kids at school

Russell and Jilli are very excited to attend the Silverton COG.   Always wanted to return to Broken Hill along the trip as did not do and see everything there on our last visit there.   Also can catch up with Ennis McLeod which will be lovely.

Not travelling with the van until mid July.
Got MikeO interested to tag along for 3 - 4 weeks and likely PeterU.Want to do the Darling River Run prior to Silverton. Been on my gottado for a long time.

Going to Europe late May for 6 1/2 weeks.

That isn't too bad for a weekend.  I don't need power as I imagine most attending COG's don't so $20 a night isn't so bad.

Dave I rang them today. I quoted her the price on their web page. She assured me it was $10 per person plus $5 for power per site. That makes it $25 night for you and Rosie.

Derek they don't take bookings for the sites. When I asked that question their answer was that there was plenty of room. I don't think it will be very busy at that time of year.
I also asked as to having a larger fire. Answer was as long as its contained.

Yes the price is good. But don't expect to get lush lawns and a pool because you wont.
But you will get a friendly place to camp with some friendly birds and animals to feed.
Silverton is a great place to explore.

We plan on staying in the area for a week or so.

Have stayed at Penrose Park 4 or 5 times over the years. Still plenty to see. I haven't seen Mad Max Museum or been to Daydream Mine.

Looking forward to a session at the Silverton Pub  Smiley Smiley

Russell (alias Snowy) and Jilli will be going to Silverton, as are Ross and Carol Wade.

Really looking forward to the trip and also to catch up with Ennis McLeod.

Pretty well finalised our itinerary for this one.

Going to be leaving early on a casual drive south, spending some time in the snowy mountains and then the Bendigo Wool Festival.

After that a leisurely drive along the Murray, via Rutherglen for some of my favourite Muscat and then north to Broken Hill/Silverton.

The trip home is still open  Smiley

Looking forward to this COG.

Plenty of accomodation options for people looking in.

Silverton pub has units only a short stroll to the camping area.

Basic huts in Penrose Park available also.

I am looking forward to a game of tennis and a silverton pub hotdog with
the Big Fella  Smiley

Looking forward to our hotdog  Cheesy

And my beer in this photo is at the Silverton Pub. I call it a pint, but Easterners would call it a Schooner.

Me too.. With fried onion, grated cheese and mustard.
In Holland they have Rookworst in a bread roll. Can get them everywhere. Can't wait till 1/6 coz I'm going to get one at Schiphol airport as soon as I arrive.
Followed by a salted herring.
Seriously salivating now.

Have dates been locked in or did I blink and miss that post? While July/August suits me best I'll fall in with the consensus.

OK, I haven't been paying attention...just now I went to mark those dates on the calendar and found they were already marked, say no more.
Anyway, we'll be there, flood, fire or famine.
Thinking..... I must look for my thermal underwear, I've been out there before in August and the water in the caravan's pipes froze.

Our program now is to be there, then a little further north to wave the detector around for a week or so.

That depends on weather you have Optus or Telstra and exactly were in Silverton you are.

We are also looking forward to being there. Smiley
Plan on leaving GI 22/7 with a zig zag route to BH.
A few pubs I want to re visit, plus Chris same with the Op Shops along the way.
A different sort of winter trip this year and will do it in a more relaxed fashion. Much shorter and hopefully less opportunities for getting bogged Cool

ROBERT’S RULES FOR DEFINING A QUORUM
0764575740.jpg
RELATED BOOK
Robert's Rules For Dummies

By C. Alan Jennings, PRP, PRP

According to Robert’s Rules, a quorum is the minimum number of voting members who must be present at a properly called meeting in order to conduct business in the name of the group. A quorum should consist of “as large as can be depended upon for being present at all meetings when the weather is not exceptionally bad.” In other words, at best, a quorum is just an educated guess.

Counting down the weeks now, have seasoned up a couple of ovens to take. A few curry and chilli recipes will be researched.
A friend has just returned from Menindee Lakes (which are full) and reckons the weather was very mild, I know things can change so I'll pack my thermal underwear anyway.

Thanks for that info PD.
Our travel plan is to spend a couple of weeks along the Murray then Mildura to BH.

With your info of the lakes being full, will now look at Wentworth/Pooncarie/Menindee/BH.
Years since we have been out there, used to be an annual pilgrimage, never seen yabbies so big since  Cheesy

My original yarn in "how to cook a galah" came from there, which in fact was true  Embarrassed

Looking at the facilities available there is no dump point at Pembroke Park where we are having the COG.  Anyone who has been there know if we can tip our cassettes down the loo.

Just phoned Penrose Park. The closest dump point is Broken Hill.

Only 5 weeks to go.
Firewood is a bit hard to come by at Silverton. So I have talked to the wood suppliers in Broken Hill and they will deliver to Penrose park for us.
One ton minimum.
Best price I have found so far is $260 ton delivered. If we get say 10 couples that's $26 each couple. How does that sound.

Or a wood supplier on Broken Hill will deliver a trailer load to Silverton for about $120-130.

Might find some closer than that , but cant make any guarantees.

Rory comes from out that way.  Not sure but he may be able to source something as well.

Either way I am, as always, happy to pay.  Will be cooking on Heat Beads anyway  Wink

Something  very warming. Like a slow cooked soup. Maybe a casserole,  pork belly and if there is enough interest a chocolate cake.

There is always interest in chocolate cake or chocolate pudding or anything chocolate if it comes to it.   Grin Grin Grin Grin

I am assuming we will need to shop in Broken Hill or are the local shops/butcher ok.

You will need to buy your grosseries and meat in Broken Hill.
But there are museums art gallerys and a pub at Silverton to support.

A larger shopping centre with Woolies, a smaller one with a very modern Coles.
Everything one needs in BH, except they closed our favourite restaurant "Broken Earth"....smack on top of the mullock heap with fantastic views over the town and way to the West.
Will have to see what my venison supplier has for me  Cool

Just a little bit of Silverton's history.
Did you know that the first Terrorist Attack in Australia was on New Years Day 1915 at Silverton?

We are certainly on our way albeit slowly.

I was talking to Topknot (Jilli) today and she was asking about powered sites.  We also will be looking for a powered site.

Those who get there first can you please make sure there is power nearby for those who require it.

Not sure when we will actually arrive.

We are also on our way, just arrived on the Murray to slowly work our way down to Wentworth.
Should arrive BH around 8/9 for a top up shop
Bloody heavy frosts about, looking for some Bonox to stretch the rum out  Cool
Would also prefer power otherwise would have to generate some.

Some good news and some bad news.

Hetty's dad has been in hospital and been a bit weak on coming out. He is 89 years of age.
She has decided to stay home and not go to the COG.
Good news is I have a leave pass to go away to COG with MikeO for 3 weeks and do some touring as well.

Mike and I will do a number of wet dishes and likely a dessert and bread or two.
Comfort food will be right for the colder weather.

We plan to get there on or about the Thursday.

I will be arriving early Thursday and staying until Monday.
On my menu I was thinking  Lamb Casserole or Roast for an evening meal, Pork Belly for lunch, Soup, Chocolate Cake and maybe another Dessert plus a bit of Happy Hour type food to fill in time. Smiley Smiley
So bring lots of warm clothing this South Australian sorry I meant NSW. COG will be a little bit cold.  I keep forgetting this gathering is in NSW. and not SA Grin Grin. Well its only just over the boarder and Silverton is on SA. time. Wink Wink

A bit of Trivia.
Did you know Broken Hill had an illegal and popular Two Up School  operating for many years behind an infamous Green Door in Crystal Lane, Broken Hill. Today Two Up is still played at the Palace Hotel, Broken Hill every Friday night.

Mike and I will likely do a Satay dish, Chilli Con Carne, a stew, a dessert, a hearty camp breakfast(similar to Kingbrowns) and some finger foods for lunch/happy hour.

Do you need a powered site Poddy?
Getting real close now.
Thinking about staying at this community run pub on my way up to Silverton. http://www.coburnhotel.com/
Should be there mid morning Thursday. Is there anyone getting to Silverton before then.
For anyone staying in Broken Hill. The racecourse is a budget camp.
Started shopping for this COG today. Been looking for some nice bacon bones for my soup. Some with a real nice smokey flavor.

Yep, was at Yamba.  Our original plan didnt have us in South Australia but in our quest to find some sun and warm weather we crossed the border.  The signs only hit you when it is too late.

We did pull up on the side of the road and have a feed of fruit though.  Were able to keep some things like potatoes, pumpkin (but only if we bought it in Victoria), cauliflower and most importantly a big bag of Brussel sprouts.

Know what you mean Derek. We are camped nearr the meeting of the Murrumbidgee and Murray rivers keeping a very watchful eye on Weatherzone.
Bloody rough track in, black floodplain ground so making a escape tomorrow.
Will look for a more user friendly spot near Wentworth where the water may be warmer  enough to dabble a soft plastic. Cool

That is why we decided to forego anymore excursions into the Murray.  The front wheel drive Fiat doesnt like that black soil one little bit at all.

Weather is looking good for the start of the COG. Thursday is warming up to be 9 over night and 23deg. in the day. So defiantly bringing the shorts.
I might even get there Wednesday. See how I go.

Nice weather on the east coast, I hope it travels inland with us but I don't trust the forecast so I'm packing my winter woolies.
Hopefully we'll be there Thursday see you all then, travel safely.

Yep, definitley winter woollies weather.  6.00 pm here and we are already inside with the diesel heater going.  Grin Grin Grin

I did drive through Penrose Park yesterday and boy is it dry.  Talking to Rory's mum and she said the storm earlier in the week only dropped 6 mills of water at Silverton and that is the first rain since January.

While I didnt stop at Penrose Park, only drove through, Enis did say that there is very little good drinking water out there so make sure your water tanks are filled.

For those interested there is a dump point in Broken Hill and also potable water.  They are both located at the Visitor Information Centre, 97-99 Blende Street.

After battling through bog holed Murray river tracks, horizontal deluges in Mildura we are now in Broken Hill being gently buffeted by a miserable SW force 8!  Undecided
With our visitors arriving on the night train today from Sydney, we will now be at Penrose Park am on Thursday.
Have put in a request for better weather, but what the hell, will be all good anyway  Cheesy

For those interested, BP Wilcannia has diesel at 1.22.9
As you cross over the bridge, turn left and its down a side street to the left. Overlooks the river.

If you have never been to Silverton before and are towing just be mindful of the many dips in the road between Broken Hill and Silverton.  They are clearly marked so worth slowing for each one until you can clearly see them.

Internet is very poor here at Silverton. Only just getting this post out. Weather is near perfect. We are having  another  great COG.

I think everyone that attended the Silverton COG we agree with me that it was a great venue.
The weather for was perfect. Nice sunny days for cooking and relaxing with cool but not cold nights to sit around the fire. Silverton really turned on the weather for us.
Special thank you to Enis (Rory's Mum) for organizing Dinky the wood man.
Great Food, great fire, great venue, great weather, great people all coming together in the great outdoors.
Thank you. Well done everyone.  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Everyone was gone Tuesday morning however Maggie and I stayed with Enis until today.  We are currently camped out somewhere between Wilcannia and Cobar.

Heading towards Bourke in the morning via Cobar.

Thanks Brian for organising this COG and for all the photos so far.  Must admit I was very slack on photos but it was an amazing time.

Thanks everyone for making the time to come.

When we get home and get our diary organised will look at another COG before Christmas and then look at one at Alstonville in early new year.

Cheers

Many thanks Brian (shackles) for organising a great COG.
We very much appreciated meeting new faces and catching up with old friends from previous cog's.
The camp oven tucker was right up there, no severed fingers, burnt toes, what a top weekend eh! Cool
