Looking for feedback on the Camp Oven Mate.

I will be doing a couple of desert trips this year and as much as I like to sit around a fire and use the coals for cooking, I prefer not to burn any deadwood that critters use for shelter.

My oven of choice for travelling is a 12" Aussie CO and I've been wondering how the spun steel type go in the Camp Oven Mate compared with a cast iron oven.

It appears that nobody uses a Camp Oven Mate, so after a quick discussion with myself (sometimes the only way to have an intelligent conversation), I have scrapped the idea and will use heat beads instead.  Grin

I use both the oven mate sizes but only with gas and cast iron cannt comment on the spun steel but I would imagine it would be OK

I actually road tested the Camp Oven Mate for Bill from Southern Metal Spinners when he first came up with the idea.  Even recorded a video that was going to be part of a TV series that never really got off the ground.  Can see it here - http://www.aussiecampovenforum.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1268732346

While I haven't used one for quite some time, I was talking to Bill not that long ago and he tells me the new COM has been redesigned to better fit the 12 inch Aussie Camp Ovens. He uses one himself regularly.

I know the original Cast Iron Boys made quite a few movies using an Aussie Camp Oven in a Camp Oven Mate. Have a look through some of their older videos and you should find some.  https://www.youtube.com/user/campovencookingmick

Yep.........havent used one for a while myself too

use mine with a cast iron gas ring.......turned down very low.....as the heat is trapped in the COM and heats up a cast iron camp oven fast.....be very careful if using SMS one

I thought that may have been the case. I've got the same size gas ring and I am curious to know where you got hold of that dial type tap on yours. I reckon it would make it a lot easier to regulate the flame.

Jeff I got mine from our local camping store....try your hardware store......Mitre10..might have them

Yes they are good for turning the flame right down
we couldnt get it down far enough with the valve that came with the gas ring
