Fire bans in all areas of SA will be finished by the end of April 2018.
Is anyone interested in a SA gathering in May?
The weekend of the 5th and 6th is out for me. But after that is ok for us.

G'day Brian
There is every chance we will be heading towards WA mid May.
Depending where and when, we could join in for the week end.

While we cannot promise at this time, Maggie and I arrive back in Melbourne from Tassie on 30 April so depending on how we are feeling, if the COG is in the first few weeks of May we just may swing that way on the way home.

Anything is possible.

I guess the main thing is to set a date and see how we all go.

Ok if I set the date for the 11, 12 and 13 of May 2018 who would be interested? Keeping in mind the 13th of May is Mothers Day. Or do we need to pick another date.

I am happy to put that date in the diary however as said, will depend on how we feel when we get back in to Melbourne and how quick we want to get home.

Early days yet but some of the east NSW folk may be interested.  I know Poddy finds it hard to knock back a COG.

Going for a drive in the next few days to check out how clean the place I have in mind is. Would people be interested in coming to the Yorke Peninsula for a COG?

Just got back from The Gap near Balgowan. I think it will be to squeezy for us.
Do you think Gleeson's Landing will be to far to go? Great fishing. Smiley

But camping in SA facing the ocean is great but you are exposed to the elements.
There is always Towitta near Adelaide.
Or Cadell.
Or what about that farm stay Derek found up the river?

I must admit that a camp on the Victorian side of Adelaide would be better for us.

The place I stayed at was Benson Park.  You would need to call him and make the arrangements.

If you are interested the guys name is Ken and it is $15 a night.  http://wikicamps.com.au/site/193743/34188556

Well, I did say we will be heading to WA, its on the Eyre Peninsular not Yorke, but Perlubie beach would be a great COG spot with flush toilets, beach shelters and a coin donation. (byo firewood, but who needs a fire when heat beads are so easy)
May be just a little too distant from the East, but there are some other great locations once Port Augusta is behind.
Having travelled the Nullarbor 9 times we still really enjoy that journey. Smiley

Just had a look on Google Maps.  Would us non 4X4 people get in there Michael.  Looks very sandy.

I expect there would be a chance of a salmon or two off the beach there????

We should be OK to go to this cog.

Where ever it suits people is OK.

I would go anywhere between Black Cockatoo down south and Spear Creek bush caravan park up north.

Spear Creek would fit in with Mikel's travel as he would right drive past it.

Derek if you make the detor to SA with route would you take back home? Through Broken Hill?
Michael Eyre Peninsular is out of our reach for that weekend.
Spear Creek and Benson Park would be our limits.

We were talking about this last night and if we do, yes will be through Broken Hill.  Would most likely take a detour and catch up with Enis out at Silverton.

But then a different way home through western NSW.

Probably sound a little selfish here, but the Spear Creek campground looks very suited.
However, the decision should be made by those travelling longer distance plus return.
Ours is a one way loop, will be returning home via the top end road.  Smiley
We cunningly do it clockwise to get a head wind for the full distance.  Cool

Just talked to Bill at Spear Creek. On the 11, 12 and 13 of May he has a large group booked in.
But we can have an area for ourselves in a bush camping area. It has 5 powered sites as well as some unpowered sites.
It has a flushing toilet and the showers are 30 mt. away.
Two fire rings are also in that area.
$30 powered and $28 seniors powder. Unpowered is $25.
Firewood is $10 bag aud no wood collecting on the property.

Doesnt matter where you go......it wont agree with everyone...

I would vote for Towitta.....mainly cause I dont have to take a 1.5hr drive through Adelaide just to get the other side......before the trip north

plus a Rick knows theres big acreage to spread out no power or showers though

I am easy with either place  just means  a different departure  time for me to get there at 7am   Grin
Depending on weather  I'll either swag it again so i can bring lots of wood or van it with limited wood   but either way I'll be there

Burra Gorge is another great camping spot.
We have a few starters for these dates. So why don't we leave the final decision on the location of this COG untill is gets a bit closer. That way we will have a better idea of who is able to make it. Then set the location to suit those people coming.

If I remember last time the first one stuck for Judy as well.

I have an aluminium Jaffla iron we use all the time on the stove inside the motorhome and I stopped cleaning it and that stoped sticking.  When it is cold I simply wipe it with a paper towel.

Every now and then I get to it with a scourer to clean it up and the first few jaffles are always difficult to remove.

While aluminium doesn’t generally need seasoning I have found that it certainly helps to not remove the baked on bits.

I remember loving Judy's waffles  Smiley Smiley Smiley

I did try them after the cog, can't remember if it was an electric or aluminium waffle maker, but it got the flick as I couldn't master it.

Looking forward to re-acquainting with the waffle master/mistress  Cheesy

So far the people that have indicated they are coming are......
Me
Ruff
Gromet
Derek
Poddy
Topknot
Cactus
Mikel
Please let me know if I have missed anyone.

I think the time has come to make a firm decision on where we are camping.
Spear Creek ? has a large group booked in for that weekend.
Benson Park?
Burra Gorge?
Towitta?
Is there anyone that needs more than just a toilet at the COG venue?
Have a say now so we can make a decision in the next few days.

Maggie and I shouldn’t need anything really.  Ability to run a generator if needed would be good.

Towitta was available so I booked it for the Friday and Saturday night. Can also stay before or after.

We have firewood/ exclusive use/flushing toilets and the shed if wanted.

I can easily un-book it if others prefer elsewhere.

A bit of uncertainty with a large group at burra gorge at the minute.

Brian, I did write that it is easy to un-book if it doesn't suit everyone.

I was surprised it was available for the weekend so jumped at it.

Can we get some idea of the cost at Towitta if we book the whole camp???  WikiCamps currently has it at $5 a night.

Reason I ask is that both have the same/similar level of service but Burra is free.

Not worried about cost myself but would still be nice for people to know what they are up for.

Some of our members will be travelling up to 1500 klm and will get there between Wednesday to Friday and leave Monday or Tuesday so a booking if a decision is made for Towitta would need to cover those days.

Dave, Maggie and I are not overly concerned about sharing the grounds with other people not there for the COG.

Towitta is a donation if the shed isn't used.

$5 per couple @ night has been the norm.

$70 @ night all inclusive if shed is used includes Power and all camp fees.

Welcome to use the chainsaw at Towitta for firewood.

There is no need to book week days. Booking for the weekend has in the past given exclusive use.

Now that it is listed in Wiki Camps as you say, I'm not sure what happens now.

Burra sounds easier.

Looks like it comes down to Burra Gorge and Towitta.
Burra Gorge is free, has one toilet but it only has trees for shelter no fire wood can be collected there so we  will need to bring fire wood in and no fresh water.
Towitta is camping for a donation or we can hire the shed for $70 a night so if we get 7 couples there it we be $10 a night per couple but the shed will need to be cleaned before we leave. The camp ground  has a toilet and tank water. Firewood can be collected there also.
So what are your thoughts people ?
We need more input from everyone so a decision can be made on where this COG is going to be.

I personally don't care however  I have heard that Burra can get busy but if we get in early enough should be fine.  and I have not been there since the fires when through
Any one know how it looks now?

Towitta  is a private afair and heaps of wood is available  with plenty of space to spread out

So why not flip a coin and see what happens  Heads Burra Tails Towitta  Smiley

If all goes to plan Maggie and I will have 10 days to get there after disembarking from the Spirit of Tasmania which should give us time to have a look at the coast from Portland around to Kingston and then up through Tallem Bend.

OK people from down that way.  What are the good camps along there.

Those traveling from the eastern states must be aware of the fruit fly exclusion zones to travel in SA,  penalties do apply.

On our trip to Silverton we got caught.  We didn’t initially intend going through SA and it was not that far from the border where I said to Maggie, I wonder if we get stopped at the border and sure enough about 5 minutes later there was the quarantine sign.

All good though as we just surrendered what we had.

You don't have to worry about your East Coast Fruit if you cook up or freeze your fruit flies and veg.
If coming from Broken Hill way you can stock up at Peterborough. Peterborough also has 2 great free camps.

Looking forward to catching up with everyone.

Haven't used my ovens since our last sa cog, so better start brushing away the cobwebs.

We are presently at Jeannie and Lindsay's at Harrington.
They are a possibility for Towitta.
Going to a HF radio meeting at Gulgong beforehand.
Can we have street address for the campsite please?

Good to see a lot of keen camp oven cooks coming to Towitta.
This COG looks like breaking the records for attendees to a South Australian COCIA COG.
Don't worry about Rick his ovens will look brand new for Towitta. Ain't that the truth Rufz??

At this stage will be following the coast around to Victor Harbour then cutting north bypassing Adelaide.

Would like to stock up the same day we get to Towitta.

For those coming that don't know the area, Sedan is a small town only 15 mins from Towitta. There is a small supermarket there.

Swan Reach on the Murray River also has a small supermarket and a very good Free camp with a flushing toilet on the Western side of the river.

Murray Bridge has woolies/Coles.

Mannum, Angaston have good size Foodland stores.

Only thing we need is someone with a chainsaw?  I may be getting one for home, so will bring that if it happens.

I haven't moved the caravan since our last Cog, so good to have this cog to motivate.

Ah yes, I do have a can of pumpkin soup in the pantry so yes can do those again.  This time I will do them in rounds like real scones instead of the block.

Cream and jam is on the shopping list.

Not good about the car Dave but you should be OK to tow, just take it easy.
I'm thinking of doing waffles in my old CI Griswold at the COG, just looking for an easy recipe, might try pancake mix.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

We will arrive Friday late morning.

There is a great free camp at Swan Reach on the Murray that is not far away if anyone wants a spot before or after Towitta. Can be busy, but normally can find a spot or two.

We don't have to make any decision yet about the using the shed, but it is available @$70 a night inclusive of all camping fees.

There look like 9 vans attending, so that's going to be $45 most nights ($5) a van anyhow.

It is good to have the use of the shed and its facilities at least for the Saturday night. There are trestles to use for a communal meal if we want to do that. Also power, fridges and kitchen facilities.

The caretaker (farmer next door) won't collect any money till Friday or Sat, so we can decide then.

I just remembered I have the makings for two different types of fruit cakes here.  I got crook the night before I was going to make them or the Challenge then time was out.

Might have to have a play with them as well.

All packed up, ready to go, but we had to make a big decision today.
Chris's 85yr. old brother went into hospital on the Central Coast nearly 3 weeks ago for bowel cancer surgery expecting to be hospitalised for around 5-7 days.
Now still hospitalised with serious complications, we have cancelled our WA trip and will also miss the COG which we were very much looking forward to.
Hoping the weather holds well and that a great weekend is enjoyed by all.

Best wishes for your brother in law Mikel. Was looking forward to a campfire session with you, but there will be another time.

My 86yr old mum had the same high risk operation (because of her age) about the same time, but luckily is recovering quite well.

It is a bugger of a thing cancer  Sad

Thinking of a stop over an a caravan park around there somewhere before Towitta as we will need to catch up on some washing.

I think we can add Lindsay & Jeannie to the list of those coming.

We are leaving Kingston SE shortly and heading for a free camp at the Narrung ferry on Lake Alexandrina.

Then up to Murray Bridge to restock then off to Towitta Thursday

You will enjoy Narrung. The walk to the lighthouse is worth doing and look for the little cave over there.

Murray Bridge is good for restocking and a look around. Mannum has a nice caravan park and an interesting Main Street. Plenty to enjoy there.

I will be bringing a copy of "The Towitta Tragedy" if there are any book readers attending.

There should be plenty of firewood as we are into the beginning of the fire season.

You will get Telstra reception there. I'm not sure about other carriers.

There is not a lot to do in the near vicinity but to relax in the bush settings.

I am going to look for the location of the Towitta Murder this visit.

The cemetery is just to the southwest of our camp.

There is only tank water available so fill up your tanks beforehand.

That is a ripper of a read. Thanks for the link Derek.

I have looked at it before, but it must have been last year when it only had three entries.

You can even buy a digital copy for $8

Thanks for the Gatton link. Plenty of info to look at on the net.

So, our challenge is to create a better group photo. Shouldn't be too difficult to do without having the four rough looking dudes there  Tongue

The caretaker will collect our money on Saturday. He has asked that we watch the weather when we have our campfire as it is still fairly dry there.

I'm guessing he means don't have a massive bonfire if windy, but I assured him that we are a sensible mob.
