Discussion was held today at the Towitta COG regards timing and location of the 10th Anniversary COG.

Consensus was reached with Alstonville Showgrounds being the location and the weekend of 28 & 29 July 2018 being the dates.

I have checked with the Showgrounds caretakers that the grounds are available and have confirmed a booking from Thursday 26 until Monday 30 July.

Camping cost is $25 per vehicle per night applies.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Please if you know someone who has been to a COG previously let them know this one is on.

Yes, we have powered sites.  For the COG they allow us to camp in the ring itself where we dig out a fire pit.

I cooked at their very first one Ron.  In fact it was so successful they were going to look at a full on camp oven festival there but the bloke running things back then passed away so it didn’t eventuate.  I think it was going to be called Camp Oven Christmas In July.

http://www.aussiecampovenforum.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1242006863

If you scroll through this page on their website you will pick up some of the photos of me back then

http://www.ncbr.com.au/scrapbook/view/33

As part of the day we had, and I believe they still do, a damper cooking competition.  The three winning teams got to sit down with me at what they called “The Captains Table” to eat a three course camp oven dinner that I cooked as part of the demos I did.

I cooked pumpkin soup, roast lamb and veggies followed by a chocolate self saucing pudding.  A local winery donated the wine.

Was a great weekend.

Great stuff Derek, I'm following closely in your footsteps it seems Smiley Some good looking dampers in some of those pics and some well done ones as well. A distinct lack of facial hair was the fashion too I see  Grin
Bell and I are looking forward to going but im dissapointed about missing out on my hometown cog. Might be able to drop in on Monday if anyone is left. I will get home sometime late Sunday arvo and might be able to drop in then but wont be able to cook anything if I do. I will just have to eat everyone elses  Grin

We all started there at some stage.  One of the good learning things about COG’s for me is you meet people with different cooking styles and this can often change your perspective on things.

I have just been talking to Astroboy, he seems keen. Time will tell.
I mentioned that he probably should bring the rest of his motley crew with him.
Might give Billy Bushcook a go next.

So us South Aussies don't feel left out, I'm in for a local cog on the same weekend.

Keep the weekend free for those that will be available.

Had a call from the Showgrounds caretaker this morning and all is good for us.

They wanted to know how many of us were likely to come.  I have told them to expect around 12 vehicles of different types.  Smiley

An 11th hour decision will be made based on van readiness, hence why no comment from us to date about attending. I really hope things pan out and we can make it if so arriving on the Friday. Out of interest do we need to bring wood or is there a supply near by?   Wayne & Sue

We will probably arrive Wednesday.
Any thoughts on what others will be cooking.

We will do lamb shanks and mash on Sunday night for Kingbrown.
Sate chicken , pork belly on the other nights.
May do a Mexican breakfast and chilli con carne.
Keen to do a no knead bread.

Also we are going to hit the road early Monday as we are grandchildren sitting on Brisbane Northside that night while parents got to the Celine Dion concert.  (8 kids I think we will have).  Cheesy

You and me bath Kev, so what is the normal routine everyone cooks a meal eachnight or take it in turns. Some cook one night others cook the next.

Taking turns basically Bear.
Same with lunch and do your own breakfast.
Unless you are Poddy, he does lambs fry and bacon for whoever likes it.
Best I have ever tried.

So what has happened to the idea of a commemorative hat, stubby holder or patch idea? Did it go anywhere?

Unfortunately no.  Life in recent times simply just got in the way.  I will however at some time look at something suitable.

Sorry about that.

Chicken noodle soup (thick) and I thought I might do some corned beef to show those who don't know how to do it without water. Also had the chilli tomato and egg dish for breakfast in mind and Korean pork ribs but will play it by ear. I haven't forgotten the lambs fry and bacon TBF, must get some at Woolies before we leave here next Monday. See you all there.

Rob.

When I die I hope my missus doesn't sell my camp ovens  for what I told her I paid for them. pd

In reply to Shackles question about a commemorative hat etc. I have been in the workshop and I have hand made  a number of  spatula shaped wooden camp oven stirrer 40cm long.
As I also do Pyrography (wood burning) I have burnt "COG Alstonville 2018 on them.
So I hope everyone will enjoy them and remember the weekend.
regards Kev

Has anyone given thought to this yet?
Im happy to scrounge up what I can around here and transport it to camp. My usual wood gathering partner in crime (KB) seems to be busy this year and wont be of any help.
If anyone arrives early and wants to help cut n split a couple of trailer loads I'll make sure the saw blade is sharp and the splitting axes are ready.

Gee wish I was going however June slipped and hurt her tailbone. I cooked this loaf when last on holidays and you don't need no knead ingredients. It turned out great.

If anyone thinks they will need fresh Chilli, Curry Leaves, Bay Leaves, Coriander, Parsley, Tumeric or Ginger, let me know , I have an abundance of all of the above in the garden at the moment. More than happy to bring a heap along for communal use.

Wouldn’t mind a few turmeric tubers to bring home and put in the garden.  Got some off you years ago and often wonder if it is still going in the garden of the little house I had back then.  Cheers

After watching the Two Fat Ladies last night I have decided to cook a shoulder of lamb at the COG

Has lots of haricot beans, tomato, garlic, rosemary, onions, bay leaves, peppercorns and wine.

Turns out like a big casserole where the meat falls off the bones.

Looks good when they did it and I can just imagine it slowly cooking in a camp oven.

Don't get on here much these days but unfortunately I won't be able to make it. I was trying to look up some photos of the first one we attended at Broke back in 2008 but they seem to be unable to be viewed anymore? I still remember it well, and it was great to finally put some faces to the names of people that shared that common interest in that little black cast iron pot. Have a great time and take plenty of photos Smiley

I think the neighbours dog may have killed it.
Caught him peeing on plants recently.
Others have died without cause.

As a new comer to the COGs may I say what a great mob of people. After a very stressful day with the settlement of out property it was a pleasure to meet, chat and enjoy their company. Thank you we look forward to the rest of the meet. Cheers Robert

Hassleback Apples?  Cheesy

Either way, they look delicious.

I thought they were potatoes in a cheesy sauce  Smiley

Now I can see apples in a custard with cinnamon on top?

What a professional looking group photo. I can see quite a few have dolled up for the occasion  Kiss

A big thank you to everyone at the Alstonville COG for making Sue & I & Cloe (the dog) feel so welcome within the group. We went for a day trip to meet & greet and put faces to names and for the short time we were there had a ball. The food was never ending while we were there so I wonder how many fibs will be told as to how much weight those that were there for the whole event actually put on?
Looking forward to seeing more photos.

Just went back through my pics to see of I missed it but nothing there.

It sure was good.  I was lucky to get a piece but Maggie grabbed one for me because I was doing something.

Just spent the last hour fixing up the camp lights, added two more and spaced them evenly. Thank you Rory and those that helped get the wood and the kitchen sink.
