Title: Briquettes Post by compass_camper on Apr 13th, 2006 at 9:09pm
Oils ain't oils also applies to briquettes. I bought some (not Heat Beads) recently and tried to use them a few nights ago, they were very hard to ignite and I finally resorted to an LPG burner under the charcoal chimney. When they were well alight I put them on my oven where they promptly went out ! Not to be beaten I tried twice more with the same result before resorting to some Heat Beads I fortunately had in my campervan. I can't tell you the brand but they were made in Rockhampton. Rob.

Rob, I once bought some that behaved like that. An absolute bugger to light, difficult to keep alight and very little heat. I dont recall the brand, they did come from a supermarket however but the main identifier was they were very flat, about 6cm. across but a dome shape less than 2cm. thick.

So what brands of briquettes/charcoal would you recommend/ have had the best success with?

LK. I'm no expert but I think "Heat Beads" are the way to go. To give them a bit of a start I dip some beads in kerosene before putting them in the charcoal starter chimney, don't use anything too flammable like petrol or you'll end up with no eyebrows or worse. Rob.

c-c, How about the lighter fluids?
Why kerosene instead of the lighter fluid? (or is this like the 'why buy special rv tp question'?) :) |

LK, if we're talking the same sort of lighter fluid, (white spirit or essence of petrol) its far too volatile and hence dangerous. Kero has a lower flash point and burns longer anyway IMO. Rob

Over here we have a chain of stores called Canadian Tire. For want of anything better, I thought I'd search their website for charcoal lighter fluid, but look what I did find:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortments/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396669574&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474396670271&bmUID=1145088379005&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443286775&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true I also found: http://bbq.about.com/cs/cookingtips/qt/blqt0007.htm & http://outdoor-living.hardwarestore.com/58-233-charcoal-and-lighters/gulf-lite-odorless-charcoal-lighter-fluid-279752.aspx So, how does that compare with Oz? :) |
