Post by Furphyslinger on Oct 20th, 2006 at 7:04pm
Noticed a furphy camp oven on ebay with made in Shepperton and questioned the validity of it being Australian made seller states that emails to Furphy appear to confirn that all ovens up to the year 2000 were made in aussie and after that year were made overseas Can we verify this as I am interested in purchasing this if this is the case

At $340 was the lucky bidder from here?

$340 sets a benchmark, it will be a shame if it never feels heat again.

Guys

I am now looking for a full set of Furphy's. I have the 15" so now looking for the other sizes. (12 and 10)  ;)

So if you see any on eBay that are original condition Furphy's dont even bother bidding because they are mine. I'll let you know when the bidding exceeds my limit or I have the full set so you can have a go yourselves.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Derek,

Even a greater challenge will be to have a full set (including 20') with matching year of manufacture.

Now look Derek, there is another angle.  There is my and others trips to Oz.  Granted I know what PD, wants me to bring him when I come, if I can find it, but who knowsI might manage to bring two c.i. items.

So, if you get a good supply of Furphys, we might just trade.

Saw that one too.
All I have to decide now is do I really need a 10" Furphy, or should I just try to get a better price for the seller?
Decisions, decisions!!
Nah, fellers, you can fight this one out between you. After all its only going to hold half a dozen Galahs'. Barely a feed for a couple of blokes with a decent thirst.
(praps at those prices its time to think about unloading some of my old junk)

mikel, before you make any rash decisions can I have a bit of a trawl over your discards, I'll take'em off your hands free of charge. Just call me big hearted, pd

Geez. Pd.   You mention "rash" decisions.
Wish you hadn't, brought back a recollection of a very "itchy" episode from a few (like, quite a few) years ago.

We (couple of fishing mates) went fishing out the back of Wyangala dam, water was good, we were quite amazed to see a flock of pelicans sort of camped in the corner where we often fished (and caught them too)
Well, the fishing was a bit slow, but we were getting enough catties to keep us amused until one of the mates said, geez, something seems to be biting me. Then it wasn't too long before we were all feeling "bitten". Bloody hell, those bites were the dreaded "pelican itch", a louse that lives on them but also attracted to humans too. Tiny microscopic little buggers that I think carbolic soap would have trouble with.
That infestation cut the fishing trip off before it barely got going, talk about you scratch my back and I scratch yours. :-?

The "rashes" I do enjoy though, are those thick bacon ones, cooked half crispy with a fried egg "sunnyside up" on a thick slice of camp fire toast. :P

Now what were we talking about????? mmmm. the junk in my shed...mmmm. spose it seemed happy enough when I looked...mmmm. will think about it. ;)

I hope all the big bidders are finished although I have already put my top bid on it which is far more than what's currently showing, not that I really want to spend that much.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Fingers crossed.   :-[

You all are going to have to post what this little baby goes for.

Some of those prices are the 'back of beyond'.

Well the little 10 inch Furphy went for $305.  I think I was lucky actually.  A last minute tip-off suggested the base may not have been a Furphy.  That may have proven true because I notice the same seller has a Furphy lid for sale on it's own so maybe they are mixing and matching.

Still it shows just how much people are prepared to pay for these things.

I reckon the chances of that are about as likely as winning Lotto and Powerball on the same day oh and having Jennifer Hawkins accept your offer of a naughty weekend away. Dream on.   pd

Just to raise a little question of you all.

If you saw that 'discrepancy', how come no one seems to have 'ask the seller a question'?  I've ask sellers for more pictures so that I can see this or that, lots of times.  & granted some have come to my e-mail account, not to the item site, still I've usually found out what I wanted or didn't want to know and it helped me make a decision.

Agree, pretty difficult to make that sort of purchase committment when you cant give the item a close up once over.
From recollection of the older Furphys I have seen in stores they are a very heavy oven with a not altogether well fitting lid, not like the old Metters which are quite fine and lids which fit closely.
Difficult to make a decision on the actual total pedigree of that 10" one, but the lid (with a chip out)is listed under the selling name of  "shepcamogirl", Shep. vic., not "emmybear2003", Goulbourne, vic.
When I miss out on something I always reckon was meant to be, didn't really need it anyway!

Oils 'aint oils and just because it has Furphy on the lid does'nt mean it was made in Shepparton by Furphy. I had a long talk with a bloke in a foundry (both unnamed) who told me they had the Furphy molds for a while in about 2000 and had made ovens for Furphy as well as Sovereign Hill in Vic.

Earlier this year I went into an Antique shop in Victoria which had for sale a 12" Furphy lid in pristine condition. ( $200 and no I did'nt buy it). Later in the course of my conversation with this foundry worker it turns out they had made and sold six lids to this dealer a couple of years ago, sure they were Furphy lids but genuine Furphy's in the true sense of the word ?
The bottom line is "Buyer beware".      Rob.

PD

Common year date sets of ovens are out there, just not on the market but in the hands of astute collectors.

"Astute collectors", well unfortunately I left my run too late and there are not a lot of ovens out there any more or at least I can't find them.
I was told this story at Millmerran by a bloke who was camped next to me, maybe its an urban myth but you can judge for yourself.
His best mate had been a camp oven collector  for many years and after this mate died earlier in the year his widow sold off the entire collection in one lot for several (ten he said) thousand dollars.

Maybe there are sets of Furphy's out there with matching dates on the lids, I'll just have to keep looking.

In my wanderings this weekend I ended up in Shepparton.  This is where it all started.

In my wanderings this weekend I came across a General Store at a little village called Coolac just north of Gundagai.  In the window were two new 15" Chinese made Furphys for $155 each.

Not a bad price if you want a new Furphy.
