Title: How to light a fire safely with petrol. Post by Waynoo on Sep 22nd, 2007 at 5:19am
G'day all,
I learned this little trick..... ummmmm..cant remember when i learnt it First collect your kindling and your timber........ remembering to work up a thirst because you need an empty beer can....... ewwwww....not VB.....xxxx bitter or gold is better...WOW....i nearly gagged typing the word VB..... ;D....now im over that ill continue.....whilst taking care cut aluminum can in half ( very sharp )....3/4 fill can with sand or soil...pour petrol in s the sand is almost saturated...... place can in fire place.....set up kindling around the can.....then light fuel in can.....Note:-....the fuel will not ignite in a WOOF....it will burn steadly and constantly for about 5 min at least.....wilst giving you time to down another tinny in case the 1 st one dont work , but that wont happen....lol This is a save way to use petrol for fire lighting....but always take all the care please......If taught lots of younger pepole and adults this method and been suprised how many adults never knew this method........Now the fire is lite.......Yep......you guessed it......time for another tinny :o Cheers .....Waynoo. |

Having driven someone to the hospital well over speed limit, when said friend had tried to light a fire using gasoline, I'm extra chicken to do that at all. I did have the sense to put a cloth into water for my friend to hold covering these chest burns, while we were heading for the hospital.
I'd think y'all would have a whole lot of dry grass down there. But then maybe MacKay gets something called the wet? 8-) |

I would prefer to use BBQ lighters than singe my 42 yo Moe off. That's why they call it woof wood, fire and petrol a bad combination.

when we light fires here on the property we mix 3\4 deisel and a1\4 petrol and it burns easy but not in a woof ,but when camping i just use the old standard twigs shaped into a pyramid with a couple peices of paper underneath and away she goes no worries ,and then the kids dont get any ideas as well,if there anything like me when i was young well the old man was allways up me for useing all his mower fuel ,but i was just lucky not to get burnt

Hi guys,
I agree that with kids around wanting to copy dad, its probably not a good idea. you cant always be there to supervise! Besides teaching your kids bush craft I think is about doing things with minimal rescources. Although you can use petrol safely a couple of different ways, eg, mix it 50/50 with sump oil I carry for the chainsaw bar lube, Diesel or Kero are a much better alternative, without the WOOF factor. I drive a Diesel vehicle & use a Tilly lantern so the two substitutes are always on hand when you need to get a fire going in a hurry, otherwise it's usually the old paper (hopefully you remembered to pack the dunny paper) ;) or dried grass & leaves for me! In reply to a couple of PM's and email's Sooty, Was Not, is not was never or will ever be a "Waynoo"
If The Soot wanted to light a fire he would not stuff around with half a beer can of petrol and sand. The minimum requirement to light a good fire is 4 gallons of premium ULP and no sand. Besides Waynoo is a bit limp wristed for me The Singed Sooty fire.jpg (45 KB | ) |

Yep, Soot, almost let a couple of them seep/slip in here.
Somewhere there is a post where Waynoo said he lives in/near MacKay. & that's the part of the coast you're on, methinks. Clearly, I wasn't alone in thinking you could have had a 'change of identity.' Heck, I'm thinking of having a 'change of identity', myself. After all my puppy, Kopit, is now more than 6 years old. Will I be able to cope with the angst when she becomes an angel, [smiley=24.gif] , that is the question? :-/ |

I recall reading about a fatal accident which occurred in the NT.
There was some sort of party going on with the use of tins of sand dosed with petrol as lighting. Somehow there was an inferno created that a young woman suffered fatal burns from. This is from recollection, probably about 5yrs. ago. It was reported in the SMH weekend magazine, the parents of the deceased were fighting for a proper coronial hearing. For me, a handful of dry leaves and a few twigs is plenty to get any fire going. cheers mikel |

Yeh, check the fire on the left here,
we didn't need petrol to get that one go'n If I recall I think it was dried grass & leaves too. The old hollow log standing upright in the middle works a treat after dinner. Mick. |

We also use a few twigs & a few sheets of news paper, & have done the old through a tin of petrol on the wet smoldering fire, not tip it on but through the whole tin in.
My mate from the volunteer firies showed me how they start back burns & worked great on wet wood, he had one of those drink bottles from a take away shop, the ones with a top nipple type :-* he put half deisel & petrol like what was mentioned earlier, then you use the squirt bottle to spray it strait onto the damp smoldering fire, it burns slow with the deisel, he said his brigade do it all the time. personly i like the whooof 8-) Trev Aus |

As an ex-firie I can tell you the mix for drip torches used to start back-burns etc is: 75% diesel 25% petrol.
I use to goose it up a bit, about 50/50, means you have to walk a bit faster (LOL) when lighting up dry scrub. Personally I think petrol is dangerous as a fire starter and use leaves 'n twigs when I'm camping but to each his own..... as long as you don't burn me out ! BTW most firies are pyromaniacs and love a good fire and driving the BRT (Big Red Truck) pd |
