Hi Murray

Freight cost about $63 but that also included a heap of cookbooks as well some  top books available from RVoutpost store in US and they have gear we havent even heard of in Australia got some great lid lifters and oven scrapers as well as all Camp Chef gear worth dealing with these people as they really do provide a great service and follow up as well

Got the following email today from the importers of Lodge products into Australia.  Looks like no Lodge Camp Dutch Ovens here for a while.

Also posted on the International Dutch Oven Society and Camp Chef confirmed the info in Furph's post above.  Products in store by Christmas.  Waiting for a response from them as to what models they will be stocking.  If Anaconda import direct from China where they are made, as I expect they will, then the cost should be reasonable.

I think I have just about given up on Australian made ovens.  Apart from the few old ones around I doubt we will ever see anymore new ones on the market

Derek,

The Lodge range as you would be aware is quite extensive; however we are limited to what we can access here in Australia. We would be delighted to list the Camp Dutch Ovens if we can access them, however I don't think that this is going to be possible just at this stage.

I like your web site - a lot of information

Derek,  the reason some US residents speak so strongly in favour of Lodge is that they still make most their products in the United States.  They also have a very strong world wide marketing outfit.  Just you go to google UK and do a search for either Dutch oven or camp oven!!!!

I'm sure if you've been reading many sources carefully, you would see that those who look for the pot quality like the Camp Chef as well as the Lodge.  How's about, you just do a bit of cooking comparison -  the new Furphy, the new Lodge and the Camp Chef.  OK!!!!

After all we have multinational markets these days.  The cost of labour is higher in Oz, US, CA, UK...... than China, Taiwan, India......  Who can blame any company for watching the margins.

Information from Camp Chef is that Anaconda will be stocking the deluxe range.  This will be the ovens with this lid in the pic below.  They come in 14,12,10 and 5" models so we will have to see what ones they bring out.

How deep are the Camp chef 12" Deep camp ovens. I reckon most camp ovens could be deeper. Don`t want the lid sitting on top of a roast.

Like scones (which you might call biscuits) they come with various recipes.
Almost the consistancy of ..... dare I say it..... McDonalds Hotcakes.

Served with Whipped Cream and Strawberry Jam usually for morning or afternoon tea.

My grandkids have something halfway between a pancake and a pikelet with
honey or maple syrup for breakfast.

In the "Mine's bigger than your's Category", I have a proper camp oven (with legs and dished lid) that is 12" wide and 10" deep, no makers name or markings.  I call it my camp oven on steroids, I need steroids to help me carry it around.

Advice just to hand from the Everton Hills Store in Brisbane is that the Camp Chef products are now in store including camp ovens, skillets and a seven piece cast iron kit.

Not sure what is in that but looking at the Camp Chef site the seven piece set is this and if thats the case it would be a great buy.

- One 12" Classic Dutch Oven
- One 12" Cast Iron Skillet
- One Cast Iron Square Grill Griddle
- One Lid Lifter Tool
- One Cutting Board
- And Two Pan Scrappers

Prices for the camp ovens are:

These are the deluxe ovens

10" $69.98
12" $89.98
14" 109.00

I am sure other Anaconda Stores have them or pretty close to it.

Perhaps someone would like to go have a look to confirm prices and let us know.  I will be back in Brisbane shortly myself anyway and will go have a look.

Cheers

Derek

G'day all,
just a follow up on the above post by Derek,
I have visited the Everton Park "Anaconda" store today and confirm that they have in stock the deluxe version of the Camp Mate CO's they are as follows
10 inch-69.98
12 inch 89.98
14 inch 109.00
7 piece set as listed above for 139.00
I saw about 3 or 4 different skillets but could not see any 5 inch CO's. I was informed that all Anaconda stores have the full line in stock.
Did I buy any? mmmmmm  Too right I did!

Skip, not to be a fuss budget, yet,   It is Camp Chef.
US company.

Camp Oven Mate is from Southern Metal Spinners, Aussie firm.

US firms currently manufacturing cast iron  are pretty well Lodge and Camp Chef.  Camp Chef are made overseas, but have a good reputation on this side of the Pond.

One of each I see.  ;D

Camp Chef is an American company but the camp ovens are made in China.

Check out these babies http://www.macaovens.com/  The 22 inch one weighs 160 pounds or 72.5 kilograms.  Maca used to manufacture these in the US but they are now manufactured in India.

Skip,  Here is the parent company webpage:  http://www.campchef.com/catalog/cat/7/0/0/Dutch+Ovens.html

But if you were buying over on this side as some members of COCIA have, RVing Outpost (family run business you probably know via Julie Mik) here is the relevant webpage:  http://www.rvingoutpost.com/cooksupplieslist.php?department=Dutch%20Ovens

Over time I have learned that their products are made overseas, but they very firmly say they control the iron composition.  As I have said they are well respected.  I have several.

Derek, you have sounded so much like those US residents who think only US made anything is any good, that I have suspect you of prejudice.  Forgive me if I do so.

In other places I have seen Camp Chef's assurances on quality of iron.    Where does one go to get some input from Furphy company people?  To be fair, I think that is very important.  They're selling ovens, they must have supporters.  Where are those people too?

Alas, yes I guess I am prejudiced.  Australia is home and there be no better place on earth and if I could, I would only buy Australian products but where are they?

So I am forced to buy from overseas.  In doing that I have decided to go for quality.  Before making any purchases I set out to look for quality.  To my mind Lodge have it without a doubt.  The finish on a Lodge camp oven has to be seen.  They season far better than any others I have seen.  Camp Chef come second to them as far as I am concerned although Camp Chef are an excellent product as well.

As for the new Furphy's  I would need a lot of spare cash before buying one.  The cast is not good, many you see have lids that do not fit properly and the little stubs of legs are in my opinion useless.

As for new Furphy owners, where are they???  We certainly do not seem to attract them here for some reason.

However when it comes to spun steel, I do not believe you can go past the Southern Metal Spinners, Dr Livingstone products.
