This morning I was down the back and found a  kookaburra chick on the ground , beside it was another chick that had died . I've kept it warm and went looking for some grubs for it, gave it a feed and put it in a box with a light on over it . Went back down the back to find the nest and put a ladder up to see if the nest still has any chicks in it , no more chicks  so Im keeping an eye on the nest  to see if the parents come back  , a few magpies but no kookaburras so far . I'll give a few hours  and keep you updated on its condition . Anyone know what to feed it ? it can't just live on grubs . It had no feathers and its eye are not open yet it can only be a few days old  I would think.

And NO i dont was recipes for it . ;D

That is a most interesting situation, and hope you can bring that little fledgling up some how.
I am wondering were there any eggs in the nest? If so, you can be almost assured they were layed there by a Koel, an Asian cuckoo which migrates here this time of the year for foster parents to hatch and rear its offspring.
No wonder they make that hidious noise all night, no real home to go to, just "party on"

I put the surviving chick back into nest after see a couple of kookaburras hanging around . I thought the chick was going to fall out the nest again as it was right on the edge of the enterance  then one of the parents flew up to the hole and sat for about a minute then flew away to a nearby tree then another kookaburra flew up to the hole and went into the nest  so hopefully   it will stat put and not fall out again .

Had a look this morning and its still up in the nest . The best is I dont have to get a ladder and check . The nest is visible from the Bar.

Any excuse.......sit & drink all day when your really just looking after the birds best intrest aayy!! ::)

Got home after dark last night  so I checked on the nest this morning,  no movement , up the ladder I go to find the nest empty. I'm asking myself did I do the right thing and put it back in the nest ? If I should have tried to rear it myself .

         Most birds eat will mince, hamburger mince is what my lot gets, extra fat for energy, magpies, butcher birds, mini mags (pee, wee's) crows, wattle birds even spotted neck turtle doves come in & clean up.
