Title: It's That Time of year Again!
Post by BILLYBUSHCOOK on Nov 29th, 2007 at 8:21am
Last night, out in the shed I was getting dive bombed by christmas beetles by the dozen.
although I spotted one the other day, this is the first big wave of them this season.

this one shows the colours a bit better

I always look forward to seing the big clumbsy "bi planes" at the start of each season.....or may be not.....it reminds me i'm about to get a year older again.

with christmas beetles, Cicadas & bugs going nuts, it can only mean one thing for me......time to fish!!!!!

Mick.

Hey Mick
Top photos. It is something that I overlook as just another insect, nature in all its splendor.

how can you call them just another insect?? when you hear them comming it's like a B52 attacking, then they spend the next 10 minutes trying to knock the tube out of the fluro's ;D ;D

I think someone discovered them at Christmas time.  That seems to be when they come out.  You never see them any other time of the year.

Two years ago here it got up to 54 degrees centigrade on new years day when we had the big devastating fires.  Believe it or not thats around 129 Fahrenheit.

Sounds like they should love humans for giving them more food.  " Farming and clearing in the past 200 years has radically changed the environment, creating an unnatural beetle population boom."  Or that they are a sign of need for more biodiversity.

8-)

Mick

That was at Junee on 1/1/2005.  Remember the fires.  They lost five homes and thousands of sheep during it.

I remember driving along and thinking my car engine was going to boil.  It was so hot the temp gauge was nearly in the red, way way above normal.  I even turned the aircon off to try and help.

The hottest day I have ever experienced.

I'm on the mid East coast about 70Klm in land from Newcastle & our Christmas is usually between 35 - 42C(110F)

Perfect for sitting around the BBQ/pool area with a nice cold beer on my birthday!

it doesn't seem that hot if your out doors, shirt off, in the shade & a gentle breeze. it is only when there is no breeze or your in doors that I feel the heat.

Some 30 years ago I was at Elat, Israel and the temps when seriously over 100'F.  I have not been in any place  that hot since.

Guess I'll have to head home before then .........
