Title: Thermometers Post by Crazy_Dog on Dec 29th, 2007 at 7:09pm
Ok guy's I am new here and am looking at getting a thermometer to get the hang of temps etc so would like to know what you use for your setups...
Do you use thermocouple types or what...how do you get them inside - do you drill a small hole ? Grrr!!! ;D Crazy Dog |

There's heaps of ways to tell the temp without resorting to drilling a hole ! Some old ovens have a notch in the side of the lid so as you can put a skewer in to check your cake or damper. Nowadays you can buy an infared laser gun no touch thermometer, Bunnings have 'em $29.95 or check them out on eBay.
Contary to what people tell you taking the lid off for a quick look is better than overcooking something, JMHO pd |

CD check out this thread. Derek has a picture of an oven thermometer in one of the replies. I purchased one from Barbeques Galore in Hervey Bay. Works well LogFire |

I have thermometer the same as Derek's and LF'S works just fine and for less than $7.00 at Big W or K Mart. And as PD said a quick look does not hurt. Muzz |

Here's a ring method:
(North American terms 'charcoal or charcoal briquettes = heat beads') For all oven sizes, place one ring under. This chart lists number of top rings only. Oven Size....Slow Oven .....Medium Oven ....Hot Oven .......Very Hot Oven ..........................300̊F................350̊F................400̊F............450̊F .........8" ..........1/2-ring ..........3/4-ring ..............1 1/4-rings......1 1/2-rings .......10"...........3/4-ring ..........1-ring .................1 1/2-rings......2-rings .......12" ..........1-ring .............1 1/2-rings .........2-rings ............2 1/2-rings .......14" ..........1 1/2-rings .....2-rings ...............2 1/2-rings .....3-rings .......16" ..........2-rings ...........2 1/2-rings .........3-rings ............3 1/2-rings As the charcoal burns, add more to maintain a constant ring size. :-/ |

Went and bought a small thermometer like Derek's on Sunday - so all should be good. Also picked up a heat bead chimney as well...what a beaut device that is...

Thermometers...shermometers!!!!
Just listen to the sizzle ;) ;) It's all about feel or instinct (depending on how many beers!!!) & I think lifting the lid occasionly helps let the steam out when you want to brown things off to finish anyway!! Mick. |
