Title: Charcoal Lighter Post by skiproosel on Jan 15th, 2008 at 6:34am
I have been searching for a Charcoal Chimney for use at home in the Weber & CO when time is a bit short.
I rang most of the BBQ shops in my district with the same answers -"sorry they don't make them anymore" I decided to make one from a short length of stainless flu. When I went to get some flu I did see one in BBQ's Galore-Yahoo Buckaroo & for the price $29 I couldn't be bothered with making one. Boy don't these save some time when you decide on a quick BBQ and only need 10 minutes for coals. Anyhow here it is Regards Skiproosel IMG_0979_Small.JPG (40 KB | ) |

Congrats on getting one. Had a bit of an issue with charcoal chimneys yesterday. I bought one just like yours from BBQ's Galore at the beginning of January and paid $19.95. My neighbour and I went into BBQ's galore to buy one for her yesterday and there were none in stock, but if they were in stock the price had risen to $29.95. My neighbour didn't want to pay $30 (since she'd managed to get her whole weber for $50, it cost her $20 for everything but the top grill plate, and $30 for the top grill plate from bbq's galore).
We searched on the net and found this photo: http://www.bbqblue.com.au/smoke_woods/site_files/fuels_charcoal.html (scroll down a bit) and it was all she needed to make one out of what she had in the shed. I later found this website: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Charcoal-Chimney/ So I think when mine dies, I'll make one.. sounds like a fun activity. All you need is a 3 litre golden circle juice can and away you go LOL!! |

Hi there excited newbie, love the handle.
Please don't tell me you got one for 20 Bucks or anything- promise me that will you. I gave $29.95 for mine and it seems whenever I buy something others take great pleasure in telling me they bought it cheaper ;D Welcome to our world and look forward to sharing (all sorts of things) with you. All the best Skip |

Like Mick's, mines only a paint tin works just fine.

Old paint tin or coffee tin works great. Tried mine out on the weekend lighting on a little gas burner and worked fantastic. No smoke and had the bricks firing in no time.

Hey Robbo, I was lighting mine off my ring burner too, until the ash kept clogging my burner up, The fire lighters are the way to go. Mick, |

Good point Mick.
I was burning them to the point where the bottom bricks were red and flaming then taking them off and letting the flames do the rest for the ones on top and getting little ash, but I suppose over time even a little ash may cause problems. I've just found that firelighters don't seem to last long enough. Then again I'm probably just too impatient. Tah for the tip Robbo |
