Title: Spanner in the Works Post by skiproosel on Jan 15th, 2008 at 12:50pm
With all this talk lately about crabs etc. I am getting excited for the new run of Spannercrabs. Although not as exotic as mudcrabs they eat very well and there's a damn site more of 'em. We usually have a catch & get 20 or so people around for a crab session & xxxx. I haven't tried them in the CO yet but will try them now with recipes the others have shared.I mtook this piccy a while ago but will update with a new one when the weather breakes & I can get out.

Didn't know about the 12 mins in CO Furph -so thanks for that,I agree that we sometimes get carried away adding all the spices & this & that ,then we completely miss out on the beautiful delicate flavours that eminate (sorry getting carried away) from a plain old boiled crab in salted water-cold of course!.

Having never seen them and as there is so many in the picture its hard to gauge how big they are. Next time you catch them could you put a hand or foot near them :P
I gather they are smaller than the muddies. I know with the blue swimmer crabs we used to catch we did them in big pots of water just till they changed colour. |

Hi Carolyn
most of the seafood joints have these crabs for sale. They don't change colour much when cooked unlike muddies & sandies. Because they come from fairly deep water (over 40Metres-120Ft) the different pressures make them sluggish as far as crabs go. I've never been nipped and I've caught heaps, so using a hand or foot in this case will be OK [smiley=smiley15.gif]I put my catch into a slurry of ice and sea water which causes the crabs to go to sleep. If their then put back into the sun they will start to move around again when warm. |

Why do they call 'em spanner crabs ? Is it because if they latch onto you yer n**s tighten up ? Nah that couldn't be right.
