Title: my first camp oven Post by AussieSunset on Feb 10th, 2008 at 11:08pm
I was given today a 9 Quart camp oven. 8-) It's not an old one and all seasoned but i'm not real sure on the size of it. I've looked on here to see if there is any similer but all i see is number this and that. I was sort of wanting to figure out what size it is for the calculator on here to help me work out whith how many heat beads to use for different types of cooking.
There is nothing stamped on the oven so i dont know what brand or anything other than on the box it's got 9 qrt camp oven. It's my first so i'm wanting to try it out hopefully before i go camping with it. I only have an electric stove at home but thought i'd get some heat bead thingys to try it out. I do have an old pot belly BBQ to heat up the bead thingys. Can i do that? :-/ |

Welcome AS
Measure the diameter of the oven and the deep.. that will give us some idea as to the capacity. Look back in someother posts about using heat beads and away you go. muzz rightpots1.jpg (11 KB | ) |

This is my 9 qrt, probably the most versatile size I have, although I love my 15".
it measures 12" across the top & is the typical one you would get from a camping store at present. with the heat beads, try the 3 up & 3 down principal.......the oven is 12"....12 + 3 = 15 beads on top....& 12 - 3 = 9 on the bottom, Mick. |

Hi Heather and welcome to the site.
As Mick said your camp oven is a regular 12 inch one and about the most common sixed camp oven you can get. Trust it gives you many enjoyable meals. Derek |

Thanks BILLYBUSHCOOK & murray. ;D
Yeah i measured it and it's about 12" across the top and about 5" deep. I'll try the 3 up 3 down. I'll have a look around the other posts about the heatbeads and how to use them right. I took a picy of it so i hope it works as i havent posted a pic before on here. Heather 8-) i can't get it to work so here is the link. Fixed it - Derek |

The brand is on the box TOC
that actually looks like the same brand as my 15" oven which I bought in Coffs Harbour & cant find another one like it, it didn't have a box so I didn't know the brand until now. note how big the handle on the lid is, most others you cant get your fingers under them!! my 15" Mick. |

Thanks Derek for fixing that up for me ;D
Thanks BillyBushCook I just thought that was something else lol TOC. My friend who gave it to me has a few and was moving and didnt have the room to store more at her new place. bonus score for me though as i was thinking of buying one to try things out in it. I've done a lot of looking around here and it's gave me a lot more of an idea on how to get things going at least lol. proberly will still burn things though as i'm not much of a cook. Oh what is the best thing to put in the bottom to put your baking pans on? I see them being used but dont know what they are nor is there one with it. I'm blonde ::) Thanks everyone, top site Derek! Heather,
Most camping stores who sell ovens will carry the trivets also but you can improvise, any thing which will keep your food off the hot bottom will do, although I prefer to use mesh when cooking meat to let the fat drain away like the one in the photo below, but for vege's (in a seperate oven) they can fall through the big gaps so I cover it with Stainless Steel mesh (smaller holes) Also you mentioned before about using heat beads, obviously Camp ovens were originally invented for use with a fire & as such it makes it a little easier when you have a good fire full of coals to use, so you can shovel out as many as you need. My point is that the heat beads take a bit of extra work & practice to get the heat right, If you can, I'd sugest using fire coals (not ash) for a first time around with a big fat chook!!! Mick. Ah so that is what they are called. I wasn't sure but thanks BillyBushCook. Now i wont look like such a dill ;D I got a few ideas now what to use.
As for using coals that will have to wait till I go camping as i dont really have a spot to stoke a good fire to get the coals :-[ So i will have to try with the heat beads for now and heat them with my little potbelly BBQ...hopefully it wont fall apart as it's getting on a bit. ;D I remember we use to use those little fire starter thingys to kick off those heat beads. Boy this is going to be fun trying to remember how to even get the heat beads heat up or when we go camping to remember how to get a fire going lol its been a long time. All the more fun though 8-) |
