Went to Jindera swap meet(just out of albury) today and got a 12" c.c.harding camp oven, the old bloke couldn't tell me how old it was but reckons it was never used? I asked him how much he said $50, as i was getting my $50 dollars out he said but i will take $40. It looks in A1 condition ive cleaned it up (bit of surface rust) and seasoned it in my spit. I do a few camp ovens in my spit for blokes she can go up over 300 and they come out black and shiny. Cant find anything on the net about these camp ovens, does anyone now the history of them? I now its bloody heavy, it was only 300mtrs to the car and i was stuffed by the time i got there. I also got a 11 3/4" skillet made in USA for $30 so i had a pretty good haul for a sunday morning

Got some photos tonight, one thing i noticed was no handle just had fencing wire for handle, looked in my jack and reg absalom camp oven book and noticed the same design lifters on side of oven and they used camp oven irons to lift oven. Can u buy these or just make them?

I have never seen them for sale but have a set here home made designed the same as those in Absolams book. Had them for 25 years or more

Hey Mal
The big problem with the lid lifters (as in Jack's book) is the lid tends to roll and you could dump hot coals every where, as I did once..so I made some lifters out of an old TV antenna and they ideal for moving hot C/O's or hot pots around...easy and cheap.

I like Harding ovens above all others and have several , well, more than several and a couple of skillets too Good ovens, robust enough to take camping and not get broken and once you get them seasoned they are as good as any.

I was told that C.C. Harding closed down about 1999 as they couldn't comply with Workcover safety requirements. It was an old foundry with a high accident record and not worth upgrading.

I use multi-grip pliers/channel grips to do all my lid and oven lifting, much better control, I've tried all the others and reckon these are the best.
