Title: I got it! What is it?
Post by Robbo on Apr 9th, 2008 at 12:55pm
My dads old camp oven turned up today ( ;Dwoohoo ;D). A nice little 8". The stamp under the lid is a bit worn, it has a big No.10, the brand looks like it could be MA---N and I gather the writing underneath is the foundry, starts with an M. The legs are quite long. The handle isn't original (apparently the ol fella replaced it). I've cleaned it up a bit and it is seasoning at the moment. I'll see if I can get better photos of the stamp then.
Any thoughts appreciated
Robbo :-/

Even after 40 odd years the seasoning was probably still alright to cook a feed in

It's a Maryborough Albion 10".  Made in Maryborough Queensland before about 1920.  I think thats when the Foundry closed so it could be up to 100 years old or more.

I have one exactly the same  http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/antiques.htm

Very nice oven in fact.

Robbo, you mentioned that it was an 8" at the start does the lid fit the base properly or is it an 8" base with a 10" lid??

Hey guys,  who says the # has to be the size?

Product number, product number, product #, ..........

I have a 12" Tite Top Griswold made in the Wagner Foundry which has a # 10.

Robbo, I'll bet you'll lots of use out of that pot.  I'm green.

Just went and measured it.  Across the top of the oven it is 9 and 7/8 inches.  Across the lid it is exactly 10 inches.  ;)

OK Little Kopit said he's green...unfortunately so am I when it comes to camp ovens :-/ :-/. I measured 21cm or just over 8" in the old scale across the inside diameter of the oven. Across the top of the lid it is about 26.5 cm or just over 10". Sorry my bad :'(.
Looking at the stamp it is very hard to tell but I think you may be right Derek, it very well could be Albion, and may well be quite old as my dad hasn't even used it for over forty years but even he inherited it from an uncle.
It seasoned up beautifully and the pork roast I cooked in it tonight was just melt in the mouth :D :D. I don't think anyone who hasn't had a feed from a camp oven could possibly imagine what they're missing out on.

Now thats really interesting.  Both have No10 on them yet both different actual sizes.

PD has some information on the Albions.  He may be able to shed some light on it when he returns.

Certainly looks like the same stamp

Looks identical alright, even the handle on the lid of yours, like mine looks like it has a join in the middle

That join is a normal part of the casting where they have two tapered plugs which are removed after ramming, leaving a void in the sand before removing the rest of the pattern, if they tried pulling the pattern out with those plugs in place it would leave a big hole in the sand & the handle would end up without a gap under it in the finished casting.

Perhaps the #10 is an employee mark or a particular mould etc.

I checked out a few of my Albion ovens today and all the number markings related to the size's pretty well spot give or take a couple of mm.

Never claimed to be an expert but the number under the lid of an Albion oven is the size in inches.
According to the Queensland Government Library there is no record of the "Albion Stove Works"  Maryborough after 1907 so it looks like that was when they closed their doors for the last time !
BTW I saw a 10" Albion for sale in an antique shop in Dubbo the other day, fair condition .... $180 no offers.         No I didn't.
