Title: 5" Lodge Camp Oven
Post by Derek on Jun 26th, 2008 at 10:02am
These are starting to get a bit of a rarity now as Lodge no longer make them but bugga bugga bugga bugga, this bloke outbid me by a lousy $1.51.

Would have still been less than I paid for my 10" Furphy.

Just order a 6" version Derek only about $30.00 and the therapy will help you get over it. :)

Don't feel bad Derek. The 5" is a rare fish and I may want one, but I am not willing to pay such high prices for one. :(

I do, however, have 4 of the new 6" 1qt Lodge CO's. They go nicely with the other 8 Lodge CO's I have. So I have every size CO that Lodge currently makes.  ;D

As far as comparing the Lodge 6" to the Camp Chef 5" I am just going to keep my mouth shut.  :-X  Yes, I do have 2 Camp Chef 5".

Best, Duncan

Well here it is.  I finally got one and in a weeks time it will be flying across the Pacific to Forest Lake courtesy of a great bloke in the US
who purchased it for me.

Looks like it has been very poorly seasoned but a little while in the top of the barbecue hood at 500 degrees will soon fix that.

Congrats Derek, :)

I suggest that you have an armed guard to keep watch on it at CO events. It already has legs, but it just doesn't need to go on walkabout without you. :(

It would be nice to have a 5" of my own, but I am not holding my breath. The 6-inchers are doing me just fine right now. ;D

Best, Duncan

Derek,

Congratulations on your newest addition! As a cast iron addict, I'm sure it will be one of the gems of your collection. I was fortunate to get one before they became outlandishly expensive. I've quit taking it to events for fear of it finding a new home. When I want to display a variety of ovens, I use my Camp Chef as the "baby" oven.

What's the first thing you are going to cook in your new oven?

Yikes, cook in it !!!!!!!  Am I supposed to do that ??????

It's going to take pride of place in my lounge room as a display.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I actually have a couple of other old Australian camp ovens here that cost much more that this little baby. Might have to up my house contents insurance again.  ;)

I LOVE the Furphy ovens you guys have. Are they the ones that are so expensive? Is there any practical way for someone in the states (ME!) to buy a Furphy?

G'day joanne, 99% of the Furphy ovens around now are the "Made in China" variety and from what I've seen a bit on the rough side with very short legs and often poorly fitting lids. People selling them now are trading on the fact that most people don't know the difference and think they are buying a genuine old Furphy when in fact it was made overseas since 2000.
All the Furphy pots I've seen on eBay in the last twelve months have been the Chinese ones and have gone for almost double what you can buy them for new in camping stores.
I'm always on the lookout for good old pots on my travels but let me tell you they're few and far between and Furphys are even scarcer LOL.

Hi PD,
I'm actually coveting the old ones. I'm doubtful that I'll get my hands on one, but they are really great looking ovens.

Well you know what it's like.  You decide to buy something and during the conversation one thing leads to another and before you know it you have bought more than one.

Well that's what happened in this case.

I badly wanted a 5" Lodge and bought it.  The guy who helped me knew I wanted a 6" so offered to help me get one.  Then further into the conversation he mentioned another small oven that I might be interested in and before you know it I was in hook line and sinker.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Here is what is heading my way now:

1.  The 5" Lodge we bought off eBay
2.  A six inch Lodge
3.  A 5" Limited Edition Camp Chef especially produced for the International Dutch Oven Society.  Only 500 of these were ever made and this one is serial number 300.

Gawd, is this obsession ever going to stop  ::)

Green here  :D funny how things can snowball sometimes, good luck to you Derek, I am still waiting to see the money taken from my bank account for my 6".  I had an email the order was accepted but wont expect it till 8 days after the money is gone.  The 5" looks a lot smaller.  I think the actual measurement for my Lodge 6 is 6 3/4".

Joanne I  think most of us would prefer an older camp oven but there are quite a few of us looking these days and I think the word has got around  :D.  I mix with a lot of seniors and keep asking if they have any they don't use any more but most seem to have got rid of them years ago.

Same here Carolyn, I'm always on the lookout for the very elusive old camp ovens and people often say to me,
"Oh yes, my oldies had a few CI pots, they probably went to the tip when we cleaned the house out."

I wonder how many good pots ended up in landfill or rusted out as a water bowl for the dogs ?  Oh it brings tears to me eyes.

I remember talking to an elderly lady at Culcairn in Southern New South Wales.  She had a collectibles shop.  She was telling me that across the west, particularly the Riverina, that a lot of the old stuff had been thrown down the old homestead wells.  This included camp ovens as well as other old cast iron.

On top of that iron mongers were paying top dollar for Aussie cast iron items, due to its quality, to send across the China to be melted down for new stuff.

Kinda makes you shudder doesn't it.

Can remember in the 70's blokes were going round the old Stations and cleaning out the property dumps of the cast iron including old engines etc left nothing behind

Still going on Furph, I was in Adelaide recently and saw semi's loaded with scrap steel going past, my mate who lives there said,"There goes more steel , it's all being gathered from rural properties and sent to China for recycling".
