Title: Hello all Peter calling Post by aidanm on Jul 12th, 2008 at 11:48pm
Hello all
I am new to the CO and am hoping to do a bit of cooking on a trip I have planned to inland Australia in a couple of months. Haven't actually bought a CO yet but will be soon. Looking forward to the whole experience. |

Be careful Peter, buying your first CO often leads to catching a disease called Ferronic Fixation Disorder. Anyone here will tell you how this makes you incapable of making rational decisions when around camp ovens. Driving many kilometres out of your way on the off chance of buying a second hand oven and going vast distances interstate to Camp Oven Cooking Festivals, be warned.

Welcome Peter,
PD is on the money there. If you only buy one CO for your trip, I woudn't mind betting that you'll have more than one when you return. Thats only the beginning. Good luck Cheers Jono |

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I'm from Victoria but hoping to see a good deal of the rest of Australia.
I have had a look at a few ovens already but wouldn't know what to buy. Any advice for a novice? Does price matter? None of the ovens that I have looked at have carried any warnings of their addictive properties but I wont be able to say I wasn't warned. I certainly can feel the enthusiasm for the ovens coming through in these posts. |

Hey Peter
If I was to buy my first TWO ovens I would get 2 X 12" ovens Maybe even a 15", Cheap chinese ones will work fine for ya ($30-45ea). I now have collected about 5 x 10" ovens and can hardly find a use for em, Maybe gravy, custard that sort of thing. With ya 12" ovens ya can throw a leg of pork in one and veges in the other sit back have a stubbie no worries, I find I like plenty of room around my veges so they don't get all mushed up tring to turn em' . Also try and get one with a bit of depth about it so ya pork don't burn on the lid. Then you'll probably need another one for ya bread. By now the disorder has probably kicked in and there will be no end in sight :) Keep it fun JMHO Cheers Jono PS price don't matter yet, It will though when ya find a original Furphy |

Pete
You have a couple of good camp oven festivals in Victoria that would be well worth a visit later in the year. The Great Victorian Camp Oven Festival http://www.campovenfestival.com/ The Camp Oven Cookoff at Redesdale http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/Demos/Brochure%20%26%20Entry%20Form.pdf |

Thanks for that Jono. I hadn't thought of the need for two. I am glad you have pointed out the larger oven - 12" is the way to go. I was looking at a 10".
I assume the measurement is the diameter. Cheers Peter |

You are right there Aart. My daughter was over a while back and commented on the ones I have in the lounge. A quick calculation and told her what they were worth and she went ::) |

Title: Re: Hello all Peter calling Post by BillyBushCook on Jul 14th, 2008 at 10:53am Hi Peter & welcome to the forum, I think Jono was spot on with his suggestion, yes the 12" is the diameter & a 12" is a very useful & versatile size, although I love my 15", especially for meat & you can fit bigger or odd shaped pizza trays or bread tins in it & the 12" is good for the veg or a pie tin for meat pies or apple pies or Mulberry pies...........I'm slobbering already ;D Although as I said Jono is on the money, I'd suggest a 12" & a 15" make a good set for starters, but beware it will not remain like this for long! Mick. |
