Title: comparison cast vs steel
Post by camp_cookie on Jul 18th, 2008 at 5:59pm
For those of you that have cast iron ovens and the spun steel ovens, how do they compare to each other as far as actual cooking goes?  Any advantages one way or the other?

I can readily get Lodge products as I live 30 minutes from a Lodge factory outlet store, but I don't know of a domestic producer of spun steel ovens in the US.  I have considered importing one of the Aussie spun steel ovens just for the novelty of it, but I'm interested in how they perform.

G'day CC they cook great but I think cast is a little easier to get good results.
Now I can see a bit of bartering possible here. :)

Hahahahaha, Skip.  Well I gotta disagree.  I learned to cook on/in a Bedourie camp oven and still regularly use the first one I bought over 26 years ago.

If using heat beads they cook as good as a cast iron oven.  Fire coals are different though and you have to monitor the heat much more.

Only a personal opinion CC, I have both and much prefer CI, much easier to gently simmer a meal in a CI camp oven. Bedourie ovens are easier to carry but fall short in most other areas.
I have a 12" Bedourie I'll gladly swap you for a Lodge....

Thanks for the replies.

The trade ideas are interesting, but the shipping is still an issue.

By the way, I picked up a 12" camp oven from the seconds bin at the Lodge outlet today for $40 US.  I also snagged one of the wedge cornbread/scone pans from the seconds as well.  I have yet to see a real flaw among the seconds.  Usually all I can find wrong is either a small rough spot or something cosmetic.  The 12"er that I picked up today just needs to be properly seasoned, and it will be fine.

I'm curious to see the results of the contest proposed above.  :)
