Title: Mair Lid Lifter
Post by Mrs._Mik on Aug 21st, 2008 at 2:30am
Have any of you tried the Mair Lid Lifter?   I had heard about them, but never used one, until a couple weeks ago.  I couldn't find mine, and some friends who were camping in our yard let me borrow their Mair lifter.  WOWWOWOWOW!!!!!!!!  I was so amazed at what a fabulous lifter it is, it is only two weeks later, and I have them in our store!

I was going to cook outside last night, just so I would have a chance to use it, but I ran out of time!   :(  Gonna have to make dinner in the camp oven tonight!   :)

Here's what they look like:

Hi, Mick!   No, I haven't been touring -- just busy working at the store.   One of these days, I'll have time to travel again . . .

Julie,  I think Mick can make stuff PD hasn't tried yet.

Here's PD's

Again, Julie forgive.  I'll dust off the wish list.

Hi Julie

I actually wrote to Mair once about getting some of these to Australia but they didn't reply.  Now that you have them what would we be looking at for postage.

This is one made by PD and it worked wonderfully, made lifting what for me is a heavy lid much easier and controlable.  It also doubles as a Lid stand.  What more could a girl ask for?  I know I should have brushed off the ash before taking the photo but whose perfect, not me!!!

BIG THANKS PD  :D

Is that just the cost of shipping or does it include the price of the lifter.

Sorry, Derek, that's just the cost of shipping.   I was hoping that I would be able to fit a bunch of them in a "flat rate" box so that folks who were close to each other could combine an order, but because of the size and shape of them, they don't fit.

Ive just knocked one up at work with a bit of a different design using flat bar PD.
Will have to wait until I get back from work on Friday morning to post pictures but it may give you a few more ideas and options.

G'day Robbo, I made up a few of the lid stands with flat bar and rod, 1/2" water pipe, reo bar etc etc,  they all work but don't look so good, a bloke is only limited by his own imagination and mine's just run out.
Look foward to seeing your pics to give me inspiration.

Hey PD.
Heres my version.

Tested her out this morning, works a treat.

The finished product (Stainless Steel)

Instead of the tripod I just went for a T-piece at the end. I havent actually seen the Mair but would consider this to be more compact and easy to store.

Very basic, just two pieces of flat bar each folded twice and two smaller pieces folded and welded on for slide guides.

I have a short & long homemade mair/tripod type lifters. I agree that yours would be easier to store and make. The bottom could be curved a bit to suit rounded lids (furphys etc) or left flat for the flat lidded models.

Hi Logfire

I thought about making the bottom curved and havent actually tried it on my Albion yet but I think with the clamping force and the fact that with flat bar there is more surface area on the handle than roundbar it will still hold completely steady flat or round lid.

I reckon the kiss system comes in here, leave it flat, but if you need to modify it..2 shifters, one either side, flick of the wrist and hey presto a bent one to suit whatever.
cheers George ;)

Robbo, you better send me a couple for evaluation and field trials.  OJ.

Seriously, the good points of yours are ease of storage and simplicity in making it but without actually trying one I don't think yours will hold a lid a firmly as the Mair type. I can turn a 15" lid sideways and shake it to get rid of the old coals without any chance of losing my hold on the little bugga.

In saying that I will make one just to see.

Mmmmmm, yeah you have a point there. May do it, Im not sure. Ill give it a go, but often when it comes to tipping off the old coals I just don the welding gloves and tip them off. The thing I like about this lifter is not having to get it in the perfect spot on the lid handle to balance it when Im just checking the feed (or more often than not showing it off for the onlookers)

That's exactly the great thing about the Mair lifter.   I've never used a lid lifter that gives you such complete control.

When using my "old" standard lifter, I also have to use the gloves to hold onto it to get the coals off and even though I have great gloves, it does tend to get a bit warm .  . .

Hey Robbo
That is a very simple lid lifter well done, even I could make one of those. I will go and buy a carton and think about it this afternoon.

Thats why I like knocking these things up at work when its quiet.
The materials are free, Mig welder, cut off saw, oxy etc at my disposal.....not to mention the cost of manufacture at home always starts with about $40 for the carton of inspiration. ;D

Being Stainless only get a slight bend even when held up with the flat horizontal, but still plenty of control.

The curved lid of the Albion poses no problem.

I even found when you drop the odd heat bead when pouring them on the lid of the camp oven it can be used like tongs to pick them up.

Oh sorry, why was I testing out the lifter?
