Title: New oven ...any ideas???
Post by Saltbush Bill on Feb 10th, 2009 at 4:47pm
I did find one oven in Toowoomba but not at the swap meet.......found this old 12 inch oven in an antique / Oldwares shop. Thought it was reasonable at $60. Unfortunatly its another amputee >:( no legs. With a clean up and a good season its going to come up well.

I remember seeing one like it in a post on this site a while back.....cant find the post now......has anyone worked out who made them yet????
Also has anyone here tried welding legs back onto an old oven???.....be interested to hear how it turned out if you have.

Love the axes, are they yours?
Ask PD about the ID of the oven, Like you have seen, but can't find.

Like you two I remember seeing a similar lid on here some time back, did'nt someone suggest they were made in EnZed ?
The only real alternative to no legs is to make up a stand to sit it on, I've done a couple out of horseshoes which are OK, still a nice find legs or no.

Greetings SBB,

Welding cast iron can be done, I have never done it or had it done. But my research into it and talking to a professional welder shows that it can be done. It is apperently very difficult and should be done only by a professional welder with experence in cast iron welding.

Best,
Duncan

Iv'e done a lot of CI welding & had many success's but welding the thick legs on a thin pot is damn near impossible,
I have been trying to repair one for Astro with out a great deal of success, I welded a leg back on & a few cracks in the base where it had been dropped, but it still kept coming up with hairline cracks, no mater how slow I let it cool or how much (or little) pre heat I used. The problem is that the two different thicknesses cool at different rates & this causes tensile stress in the thinner, faster cooling section.

There is one method I have used 20 something yrs ago which might be OK & it is Cast Iron Oxy Welding (not brazing).

In my opinion, do not try welding it, it will crack through the thin base,
You could "sweat" some legs on using Brazing rods But best just to leave it be!
I prefer the legless pots for carting around on camping trips any way. (Legless like me on a camping trip! ;D)

Mick.
