IS it the name or the brand FURPHY, just finished on Ebay was a nice cast iron kettle, I placed a bid close to the beginning of the auction only a small one but was amazed to see how much it went for. Are people just buying things because it’s a furphy or was it worth that amount?

I think at the end of the day it is what it is worth to you.  

Furphy certainly seem to bring in the dollars, there is no doubt about that but I have seen what I would consider stupid prices for things yet I bet the person who bought it didn't think so.

I have no thoughts on your question Nelson, except that most of the bidders seem to have a low # of points, for whatever that's worth.


My question is location.  This kettle is labelled Ballarat.  The camp ovens are Shepparton.  In how many places did Furphy have a foundry?  Or does the place mean something very different?

Nelson  I have noticed over many years of watching various collectables sold on Ebay  that any Furphy Item will bring big dollars. Anything at all with the Furphy brand name is highly collectable.
As an example the brass taps for Furphy water tanks often sell for more than $200, (that is without the handle to turn it on) The handle can sell for almost as much if its an original. There are repos of both around I believe.
From memory the first Furphy jaffle iron I saw go through Ebay sold for more than $500… ($620 I think but don’t quote me on that) it was a fair while ago.
As far as I know these were the same irons that anyone can order direct from the factory for $42. The moral to that story is research before you buy I suppose.
Trough ends, pig feeders , water tank ends , old cast plough and cart wheels, and complete water tanks are all highly sought after by Furphy fanatics..

Furphy camp ovens are a different kettle of fish as far as I see it. Two different collector groups both wanting the same item for different reasons hence the high prices for them. Any collectable at any auction, Ebay or otherwise which appeals to two or more collector groups will always sell for top dollar.

Well it does seem to be a Furphy - as at the Kingsthorpe COG a man came up to me and said (as I was cooking Guinness something in my new first time used 14" Furphy) "I hear these Furphy ovens are hard to find these days."

So I might put my 14" on eBay - used, good condition no chips or cracks, date not known.
