Title: Furphy Genuine Aussie Double Jaffle Iron
Post by Derek on Apr 19th, 2009 at 4:52pm
Isn't it amazing what you come across at times.  Has anyone seen one of these in their travels.

I didn't even know that Furphy made a double square jaffle iron.

The photos are not the best as they are a little bit blurry.  Click on them to see a larger size.  These were emailed to me and displayed with approval from the owner

Id say that things as rare as rocking horse sh*1 .........never seen one in 6 years of keeping a close eye on Ebay Furphy listing.....or in Jaffle iron listings.
George Ive bought Jaffle irons direct from the factory at times and as far as I know they only have the round singles for sale.

The guy who owns it should become a member here soon and he should be able to give more details but this is possibly at least 50 years old.

I to have only ever seen the round ones.

I'll admit I know very little about Jaffle irons, in fact I know bugga all so I'm asking the experts here about the Furphy J I currently on eBay that is claiming to be an antique.
It has wire handles and looks OK but is it the real deal and worth bidding on ?

The wire handles are the ones that seem to be few and far between.  But the prices being paid by all and sundry on e-bay it seems to be an absolute flogging to nothing.

I would not say they are rare, but that would give rocking horse poo a run for it's money.

I asked the seller how old it is, seller said they had no idea.
So how can seller claim it is antique?
Got to high now anyway, more than a new one.
Some eBay sellers "claims" are just that!

I cannot recal who sent me this oe even where it came from but it's an extract from an old Furphy catalogue.  I thought it was Astro actually.

This is what the old Furphy Jaffle Irons looked like.  Note the wire handles.

Wire handles do not make this a true Furphy JI. They can be made without to much trouble ( but there is a difference) There is a member on this site who has the genuine article. I had a look at mine, a copy made whose knows where. This has a kangaroo on both sides..but the one on EBay has a Kola on the top only. My two bobs worth.

I have two of the new Chinese Furphy Jaffles and have just done a fairly close comparison with the photos of that current one on ebay.

I don't think that they have come out of the same mold.  The details in the ebay one are much more distinct.  One little bit that really stands out are the claws on the Koala.  On mine they are just a clump but on that one you can actually see the claws.

Interesting though.  Last one I saw of these on ebay went for over $200.  I think I would like to examine it before bidding myself.

I had a few very interesting conversations with a few different people at the Woodgate Fair and they are saying that clever reproductions of old camp ovens  are starting to appear.

Could this be one as those inside photos look pretty newish to me.

That is a very interesting observation Derek.
On every side there is yet another imitation. Is that not what the Orientals were famous for: making a cheap copy/replica and making capital from it?
As a clapped out sapphire miner, now a tiring opal miner I can tell you that ALL gemstones (including opal) are being replaced by synthetics.
But there is a rub. All genuine gems have a fault within the stone somewhere. It is their "fingerprint". The most valuable have this authenticated by digital photo. technology.
The synthetic... perfect stone, colur, brilliance, hardness... but alas... no fingerprint to show...
Back to my point.... With "authentic" copies of all manner of CI/CO's possibly getting on the market, this should make all of those genuine and antique C/O's with the inevitable "hairline" cracks, impossible to replicate in the new copies, worth an absolute mint?
Hmmm..
Just been checking the inventory for value... alas, only 2 with cracks found. :'(

Yes I know of several very collectable ovens that turned out to copies.
Taking up mikels line an oven with casting faults and maybe a hairline crack is more likely to be genuine than an apparently very old oven in absolutely perfect condition.
SBB explained to me how an oven cast using a genuine pot as a mold will be smaller than the original, all you need is a genuine pot to compare it to, and a good steel rule !
Forget the high prices on eBay there is also the risk of buying a dud, I know I have !

I know this is an old thread but I'm new here and I believe our jaffle iron is the same as the one Derek posted the photos of. Ours gets used nearly every time we go bush. It lives in our tucker box.

For the life of me I can't remember where I bought it from though. We did visit the Furphy foundry once but don't believe we got it there (we already had it I think). My son thinks we got it from a camping shop during our travels in the early to mid 1990's.

Anyway I have attached a photo I took of it cooking our lunch a couple of years ago on one of our trips bush.

Jeff

That's a genuine old Aussie Furphy alright. Since getting them made in China they stopped the double ones. Also the old ones had the wire handles and the new ones a wooden handle.

Certainly one worth holding onto and I bet she makes a good jaffle as well.

A lot of collectors would pay big dollars for one
