A Telegram was either really bad news or really good news.

You received a catalog from a major department store and pored over it for hours. Finally choosing, the order form was posted off and goods arrived COD weeks later. { The clothes were either too big or small and had to be returned. By the time replacement arrives summer is here and the jumper is no longer required  :'(}

I remember when I was a kid my Dad had a Morse code machine.  Weird looking gadget.

Then again without modern technology we wouldn't have this forum.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

and when bread was delivered to our door......  hmmmmmmm

I remember the bread being left in the box at the gate, sitting there all day and still being nice and fresh when we got home from school.

That was when bread was bread before "Hot Bread Shops"

I can remember in the weeks leading up to Christmas there would be a morning and an afternoon mail delivery.
Even on Saturday mornings.

Bread to the door in a panel van.
Choosing frosted buns for morning tea.
The baker using a long stick with a nail in the end to hook the selection and slide it out to the back of the van.

I can go back even further than that, sawdust on the floor of the butchers shop, water running down the inside of the windows of the fish shop and the council garbage collector was a horse drawn dray. The horse was well trained, he stopped and started on voice command while the driver walked behind emptying the bins, haven't things changed !

And there was this bloke who came around and collected the Dunny can leaving an empty one behind.
And the Indian greengrocer in his truck that came twice a week, that was train days.  
When asked about his high prices

Hell PD.....im not that old and that was one of my last jobs every day as an apprentice butcher..sweep up the saw dust and put it through one of those sieves that brickes use for sand then reuse the sawdust........the idea was to get the meaty bits out...........and NO SOOTY.....we DIDNT put the bits i found in the snags ;D
