Title: Heat Beads cost Post by Kingsthorpe David on Nov 15th, 2009 at 3:54pm
Wanting to find out the cost of one Heat Bead, so can work out total costs of cooking.
Will weigh 1 kg and count them then calculate from the cost of a 10 kg bag from Big W which is the cheapest retailer I can find. Will report back later. KD |

kd, another thing about heat beads i would like to know is,
is there anyway that you can extinguish them when you have finished cooking and there is still a fair bit of head bead left that you could use later for say a cake/scones etc i have tried putting them in water (no good) i once thought of putting them in a glass jar and screwing a top on to cut out the oxygen, but didnt think that would work. (maybe melt the plastic top) cheers - jack |

In a Weber Kettle, simply close the top and bottom vents to extinguish and reuse.

Jack, have never done it myself but have seen it twice now and both guys had large tins with lids on them. I think they were the old Sunshine Milk tins. Pop the Heat Beads in and put the lid on and they go out very quickly. Like I said, never done it but have seen it work. Only issue with this though is that you end up with a rather small Heat Bead next time and I would find that a little difficult in determining how many to use for the right temperature Derek |

The other thing with a Weber Kettle is to plan for cooking a pudding after you take off the main roast, wack on a rice pud/bread n butter pudding - works well. The fire will be going for 90 minutes after you take off the roast.

I just use an old saucepan with a lid, they are good of cooking when it isn’t important to cook on time and temperature, like a stew, corned beef, ect.

I think the day I need to count the cost of the heat beads I'm using, I'll only be able to afford to eat tinned dog food on special occasions so it really won't matter. ;D ;D :D :D

With the price of electricity rising as it is...heatbeads will soon be a cheaper alternative.
I have a good supply of firewood in the backyard.. That cost me nothing Aart |

Are they cheaper ????
I was in Sams Wharehouse the other day and noticed 10 kg bags of an un-named brand for $19.89. I have never seen Heat Beads over $15.00 for a 10 kg bag. |

used to have a neighbour who gave me some "hot rocks" bbq fuel to try, wasnt too bad, but i my opinion nothing beats heat beads. big w in victoria sells 10kgs for approx $14
even when i go bush i reckon heat beads are the way to go, unless i'm at a camp for a few days then i go for hard wood coals cheers - jack |

There are a few around but none cheaper than heat beads in my opinion when you have to use twice as many and they still don't last long enough to cook a feed.
When you're onto a good thing stick to it. Robbo |

Spent a bit of time with a fella who worked in the HeatBead factory.. He loosely described the process.. A lot more than I expected.
I prefer to give my money to Aussie products like Heatbead.... Particularly if they keep on doing what they do now |
