Title: our ebay 8" Camp Oven Post by jclures on Dec 4th, 2009 at 3:07pm
Bonnie has wanted a smaller Camp Oven, smaller than our 12” ovens. Our local camping shop doesn’t have any in stock and I was told he had them on back order and they were only the 10” ovens, so I brought this one on ebay, it is a 8” oven.
It is very similar in shape as one of our 12” ovens and I have had it for well over 20 years. I don’t know who made this 8” oven or where it was made, some one might know, but regardless it will do nicely for our collection of ovens. All we need to do now is clean and re season it, and try it out over the weekend. |

I have one that size that I originally cooked bread in when we had a cast iron stove as part of our bbq area in our old home.
I have since used it in the Cobb for bread but found I could only use 3/4 packet of a bread mix as a full packet poked out the holes in the top of the Cobb :D I also did a half quantity of Dereks self saucing pudding in it. Very useful when there is only a couple of you. I look forward to pictures of what you use it for. |

Carolyn I wanted a smaller camp oven mainly for cooking desserts, as I am normally only cooking for just John and myself so this size might be good for this. I think I will still get a 10” oven if I see one at the right price. I won’t be using it for bread as John always uses one of the 12” ovens for this.
Jackparsons I think this stamp looks like xx with a k inside them, the casting is not very clear, but I agree it could be a good little oven. |

Bonnie, I would seriously consider a 6" 1 qt or 8" 2 qt Lodge. I have both and I know Carolyn also has a 1 qt Lodge. The 6" is 0.9 litres, the 8" is 1.9 litres. The Lodge 8" is ideal for desserts for 2 or a curry for 2! Use it heaps. KD |

KD is right Lodge does make an 8" legged oven. & I have understood that Lodge has an outlet in Oz, ie. there is no need to pay postage from the US.
Now, re. flat bottomed cast iron pots, to me the name is kettle, or bean pot, or just cast iron pot. These days, the marketers over here have picked up on the term Dutch Oven and are using that for any pot, no matter what its made of, that is much wider than it is tall. I see no reason to restrict it to the stuff others have mentioned so far. I use mine for many things, but I have never used it for rolls or bread. Here are a few: baked beans, chili, apple butter, citrus pumpkin marmalade..................................... especially those things taking a long time to cook. On this side of the pond there are many excellent flat bottomed cast iron pots. After all, they stood up to more rugged conditions, lets suggest lumber camps, than things ceramic. They frequently appear on N. Am. Ebay. 10" is the most common size. I have about 10. & they can be used on any type of stove, including ceramic top. 8-) |

Found the bread I cooked in mine but not in the actual pot. I was very enthused by the Cobb at first and did this roast and the bread on the same beads but I cant find the photo in the small co. I just checked mine and I know I got it from a Disposal Shop and it has no markings so probably is an import from China. It doesnt have any legs.

Derek, Bonnie doesn’t need any help thanks, ;D ;D ;)she has already spotted them. :(
The trouble is postage on some of these makes them pricey I only paid $42 including postage for this one. The vintage bit always gets me though, not knowing how old they really are. |

The vintage bit is a bit of a furphy to me as well (pun intended).
I have one the same as the first 10" I posted. I bought it around 30 years ago. It was a cheap Taiwanese thing and from memory cost less than 20 bucks. In saying that, it is most likely far older than most of the genuine Furphy camp ovens that were ever made. :D |

Yes that is my point, I have a 14” camp oven that I brought in Atherton over 30 years ago an a 12” one that I brought I Nomanton in 86, neither were expensive at the time and I don’t think I would call either of them vintage. :)
