I think I asked this question a long time ago, and I suppose it would vary with the depth of the oven, but is there a rough equivilance between quarts and inches when talking size (CO's I mean). I see a lot of ovens advertised in quarts, and being a metric baby am slightly lost when it comes to the old measure.
For example is an 8 quart roughly a 10" (not sure what an 8 quart actually is in inches) and so on, or to difficult to tell?

If you hunt up 'metric' on the web, you  can get a conversion site.  Here's my fav.  http://www.worldwidemetric.com/metcal.htm

Like 1"  = 2.54, or 26 cm = 10"
1 US quart is less than 1 litre,  but 1 Imperial (& Canadian) quart is more than 1 litre because the Imperial quart has 5 cups.  Thus, on a  UK or CA site you might run into the different ones.

Now, how many inches around to be X # of quarts.

First US ovens tend to be 1" less deep than Aussie Ovens.*

My take on N. Am. ovens equivalents.
- 1 quart. Lodge 6"
- 2 quarts 8"
- 4 quarts 10"
- 5 quarts 10" Deep
- 6 quarts 12"
- 8 quarts 14" or 12" Deep
- 10 quarts 16" or 14" Deep.

You can also consult Lodge Manufacturing or Camp Chef in US webpages.

* Exceptions.
-  Camp Chef & Lodge Lewis & Clark ovens
-  Deep  (most common is 12 Deep.
-  Some  older ones, such as the Griswold Tite Top.   #10 is actually 12" diameter and more deep than the Camp Chef  or Lodge Lewis & Clark ovens.  Later these became those of Wagner Ware after the sale.

PS.  I haven't measured, but I think the Lodge 5" has a bit more capcity than the Camp Chef 5".  Both are called 3/4 of a quart.

PPS. I have one of those no longer made Lodge 10" Deep that PD lusts after.  :P

You're not the only one that gets confused Robbo, using  imperial capacity to size an oven is an American thing. The only justification is that most of their ovens are shallow by our standards, usually 3", so a 10"x 3" deep is 4qt and a 10"x 4" is a 5qt, as I said I get confused.

NO PD, they use  US measure.  Sheesh, I didn't think I had to spell out that a US quart is 4 cups.  That's why their quart is less than a litre.

We must get too much stuff in US quarts.  Or cookbooks with US measure.

All measures I gave for US ovens ie. 4 quarts = 10",means 16 cups.

Well I shoulda remembered that US fluid measurements were different, I never claimed to be the sharpest chisel in the toolbox.

Don't you just hate all the differences in measurements across the globe.

After reading this I went and pulled my 6" Lodge out and started filling it up and it took 1.2 litres.

I give up  :P

The standard sizes we get here in camping stores as follows:-

4.5 Qrt - 10"
9 Qrt - 12"
12Qrt - 15"

I have one of each & that is what they were labled as when I bought them, The most common sizes I see in Camping stores are the 4.5 Qrt & 9 Qrt (10" & 12") no mater what the brand (Chinese that is) they seem to all be labled with these same sizes in Qrt's.

Which quart Mick,  Imperial or US

That is,  how many cups in your quart?

Too much US around here these days.  If it's  Canuck, it's metric.  Thus, if it's quarts I think US, or 4 cups to the quart.

Sorta gives me the roughie I was after. Shoulda said I wasn't after exact measurement.
So roughly 4-5 quart is about a 10", 9 quarts about 12" and any more is a pretty big oven. Cool.
