Title: Need help. Whaddyareckon? Post by Robbo on Dec 10th, 2009 at 4:58pm
Been away for the last couple days and had a little bit of a find.
I guess it's a 10" UMI. Are they very old? Knowing the old guy I got it from I would be guessing yes. She's a bit pitted but should come up alright. Pretty stumpy legs. The old fella was a ringer and may have cut them done for travel. Are UMI legs short? Side of oven. Under the lid. Only drawback, it's been cracked and welded up. I don't mind, seems to have had a pretty good job on it and adds a bit of character. Here's where I really need some help. Not sure, but think it may be a 12" Albion base. No lettering in the cast. Poor bugger's got a broken leg. (No biggie, can fix that) Long skinny legs like an Albion too. Here's the Bale (if thats what its called) Looks like Albion to me again, but I don't know that much. Also fairly thin walled like an Albion. So I need some help to identify this base and if anyone has a lid to suit they want to sell (or give me out of the kindness of their heart) let me know. Robbo, nice pot.
The lid and base are actually a pair and that is how they were sold. There are a few posts around on these. In a nutshell it is an old Albion. UMI took the moulds from Maryborough after the Albion Foundry shut down in the early 1900's. PD has the date. If you look closely at the logo under the lid it actually says Albion - Maryborough. I think KD has one. Well worth salvaging. |

Dug this out of the forums pages......written by Logfire.....It might help.....
Quote As stated elsewhere on this forum I have done a bit of research at the Maryborough Historical Society & some of the findings indicate that Mr John Walton & a Mr Hanson were partners in the Albion Foundry in Neptune St Maryborough. There are conflicting dates, 1907-1920, as to when the foundry was sold or dismantled and Walton moved to Brisbane & opened United Metal Industries (UMI). The Albion COs that I have seen are either 8 or 10 inch but a photo I have (not suitable for reproduction) taken at the Albion foundry has what appears to be CO lids that appear much bigger. As stated elsewhere I have seen a few ovens with Albion lids & UMI bases which I believe may have been sold that way because of the ownership link & possible transfer of parts to the UMI foundry in Brisbane SBB |

The logo under the lid is almost illegible but I thought it looked like the one on my Albion. So it's old, just not as old as my Albion. Any thoughts on the other base? Robbo |

My 10" Albion base doesn't have any markings so it could be an Albion

Beryl's parents lived next door to the foundry. There is currently a large white brick house on the foundry site. Beryl remembers it as the Walton Foundry, not Albion foundry. Her sister still owns the Neptune Street house and Beryl was there this week while on holidays. A Walton, Maryborough (Qld) camp oven was on eBay several months ago and I was bidding but pulled out as it went too high. Would have loved to have bought for Beryl. KD |

No, you're right MW, it's KD who is confused, the Albion foundry was at Maryborough in Queensland. A couple of years ago I contacted the Maryborough Historical Society who sent me a whole lot of information about the Albion Foundry. It closed in 1907 so if you have an Albion lid and matching base it 's well over 100 years old. As Derek says after 1907 UMI ovens were made in Brisbane but used the Albion molds for the lids with the bases being branded UMI on the side, I have a couple, BTW, both Albion and UMI are good pots and very collectable.
Robbo, I have a nice 10" Albion lid or is it a 12" lid you're after ? pd |

A bloody 12" I want PD, isn't it always the way? Thanks anyway mate. The base is a bit rusty, busted leg and has been used as a dogs water dish for donkeys but not deeply pitted and would come up great I reckon. Robbo |
