Title: Cider House Rye Part ll
Post by Carolyn™ on Feb 27th, 2010 at 4:27am
It was raining so I cooked near the house.  I tested out cooking on a tablecloth and having flowers close just to see how the heat radiation went.  It had been suggested not putting heat on top of the lid and it cooked ok but would have browned more with a few and I did need to add some more to cook lunch.

The flavour of the cider came out more with leaving it in the fridge for a couple of days and using sesame seeds instead of the carraway (I do love carraway).

I didnt have corn meal for underneath and put in wheat and it makes for an interesting bottom pattern.  Tasted fine though.

I threw in Kevs mate who is forever being attacked by the cockatoos as an extra and no "he" wont be being cooked  :D  Sorry about the music as I forgot to delete it  :D

I have the same 12" Lodge fry pan/skillet and it fits the Volcano very nicely.

Thanks for the Volcano Vid clip.

Very good Carolyn.  How big was the camp oven??

David, that's a Camp Chef skillet.  Very similar to a Lodge aren't they.

Yes that set from Anaconda was one of the most useful things I have bought have never used the square skillet though.

The lid was from the 12" Camp Chef Mulley in the set and fits also the frying pan used which fitted nicely on the Volcano.

The small camp oven that I used lidless as a bread pan was bought at Hill End at a Disposal Shop.  It is 20cm wide at the top.

I bought it as its ideal in size for bread or dessert for two.  I have used it in the past for bread in the Cobb.

I need a smaller lot of "stuff" with multi uses when we take the cub and I feel that I could manage with the Volcano, 12" CO and pan, maybe with the one of my small COs would be enough for just us two.

I must add that I do like my Camp Oven Table and when in the different circumstances would still take that.

Ha!  Dont talk to me about tables! >:(
I was cooking Pea and Ham soup in a Potjie No2 in my Volcano Senior yesterday with a very nice big Bertocchi hamhock.
I sat the Volcano on a white metal table which often features in my pictures.  As we had a visitor BMW parked in the driveway close to where I cook, I shifted the table off the pavers where I normally do cooking and to to the front lawn. Was showing said visitor (Beryl's sister) Carolyn's Volcano YouTube when heard a noise outside.  The table had sunk into the wet black soil and tipped over dumping contents of Potjie into a flower bed, except the hamhock which was still in the pot which was on its side. Start again >:(  :-[more split peas, chopping onions and carrots, get more Bay Leaves, add 7 cups of warm water. The beads still kept going.  I would like a proper camp oven table like Derek's one day ;)

David have you seen these tables especially designed for the Volcano.  Also I think yours has extension legs so you wouldnt need a table.

http://www.ahappycamper.com/products/do-table/volcano-table.html

By sight my camp chef table would be a bit narrow for the Volcano, as my intention was to use the Volcano when i didnt take the larger table I will see what happens on my next couple of camps one will be with the cub and one with the van.

TBF mostly you could use the lids if you didnt want to take a skillet (I suppose you mean frying pan ha ha]

I just love my big frying pan and wouldnt compromise taking it for a smaller one.

I have a lodge 6 inch I think approx an  eight and ten also.

I probably wasnt that clear by smaller, I meant less pieces rather than smaller and the Volcano did an excellent job on the heat beads so no chimney.  Now you would need it if doing two layers or extremely hot cooking.

I have a Lodge cast iron Trivett and use it a lot in a camp oven, is really excellent.
Thinking of buying another.
