Title: Victoria/S.A. COG
Post by OzJeeper on Jun 26th, 2010 at 8:00pm
A couple of people on here have made comment about a possible COG between the two states.

How about somewhere in the vicinity of the Little Desert National Park which could include Horsham and Nhill and close places.  It's about equal drive for both sides and could be reached in an easy days drive for either direction.
I suggest later October sometime to allow lots of planning?

I invite further discussion...

cheers

Ross I am pretty keen on this, especially if we can make it an annual event, it would be a great gathering, but I need school Holidays, the next are at the end on September, Sat 18th Sept to Sun 3rd Oct.

I agree with you Micheal but I have a bi-annual Jeep Jamboree starting on the 30th at which I have the senior first aid officer role.
How would either 17th to 19th or 24th to 26th work out with anyone/everyone?

We can do the middle week-end, travel thursday 23 sept (6hrs), stay Fri, Sat, Sun, Travel home Monday 27 September. 4 nights in total.

As the National Jeep Jamboree is 12 minutes travel from my place, those dates would work for me.

I invite others to come on board - please.  Often repeated words - this is NOT a competition, just a laid back get-together, a meeting of like minded people, a weekend getaway with a purpose, cook some stuff, talk some stuff, drink some stuff - and enjoy!.

I would love to attend a Vic/SA COG.

but the hard bit is getting an agreeable date for everyone.

we could do 24-26 sept (our team won't make the AFL finals  [smiley=sad.gif] [smiley=sad.gif])

this is only an expression of interest though. would need a few more showing interest before committing.

Hey Rick....Holly Hanna....I, and the rest of the Victorian crew are far from "pro" as you can get.  I can still make lamb shanks look like crap in a camp oven in a very short space of time.....

It's not about being "pro", it's about cooking for the hell of it and if it turns to crap, have another bevie and try again.

That's a COG.  Yes we try hard and sometimes it works.  Masterchef it isn't.  No one gets eliminated.

Fun and putting names to avatars is the go here.

Sorry about the late reply regarding the me n you.  Grandkids all week down from Qld.  Snow trip today as they have never seen the stuff.  Luv 'em to bits, but it's on a plane tomorrow for home - thank God!

Suggest Friday (if there) an "improvisation evening" with open slather.  Coals or beads, cook something for yourself and if there are leftovers, offer to all and sundry.
Saturday morning is a breakfast for the loved one, if they are there or not.  ;)  Lunch will be an individual thing.
Saturday arvo will see the signature dishes coming to life and we need to have all food on the table by 6.00pm (or close to) as it would be nice to start eating in some daylight.
Chris and I are thinking Chicken Parcels for main and a "demonstrable" cobbler for afters.

I am thinking at this COG that we might have a damper competition???????  Up to you guys for this decision but it will be a fun thing not full on.

Sunday morning will be similar to Saturday morning.  Sunday lunch I might do another rice dish to round out the weekend.

Hometime....

Back to you guys for your thoughts on dishes.

cheers

what is "demonstrable" cobbler ???

still looking for our "signature" dish [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]

have a few camps happening in the next couple of months, so have plenty of opportunity to practice and try and recruit some more croweaters.

has Rosie got the OK yet Smokeydave???

we have quite a few campers going on a trip next weekend and will try and gee up some SA interest in the cocia group.

unfortunately Cindy couldn't get the week off after this cog, so we cannot continue on to Condoblin. :'( :'(

Update.  Horseshoe Bend is on the Wimmera River just south of Dimboola and is accessible by 2wd cars etc.  The area is quite large so there is lots of options to set up camp.  I am advised by Parks Victoria that there is a $13.50 camp fee per day for a site.  Sorry about this and I should have checked earlier. They also said that there should be no problems with getting a spot.  I will be there Friday and pick a spot for all of us.
Fires in designated pits only (normal) but no firewood on site so it's BYO wood or heatbeads.  I will bring sufficient wood for a bush TV and some degree of cooking.  If everyone brings a "decent" bag of wood, that should be ample for the weekend.
If you head for Google maps and zoom in on Dimboola you will see Horseshoe Bend Road running south.  The first really good U turn on the river is where we will be  meeting.
Head south on High Street from the highway.  Right at Llyod St then left at Wimmera St past the caravan park, over the river then left onto Horseshoe Bend Road.  This is a dirt road.  About  1Km along there is a right junction at a windmill and water tank - go right.
At Pine Avenue you need to dink right then left.  Once you reach Pomponderoo Hill Road that's the entrance to the National Park.  Next left track is the one for Horseshoe Bend off River Track.

Closer to time I will put up some mobile phone numbers so we can keep in touch.
Hope this helps.

The term floater should be used sparingly around a camp gathering next to a river or water body.

ah!!!!some non-believers

I challenge you cocia members to brew up this beautiful pea soup (in your camp oven) and place an upside down pie in the middle of the bowl.

add tomato sauce and vinegar and then get stuck in to it  [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]

by turning the meat pie upside down, you uncover the soft side to dig in to and mix the smooth pea soup with the meat and gravy.

I copied my soup recipe from here. (it may be a yankee doodle dandy cooking a scandinavian recipe, but as long as it's cooked in Oz :D) I only added 6 cups of chicken stock as to make it a thicker mixture to add my pie.

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Split-Pea-Soup

smokeydk, you will not be getting a taste unless you dress up for the occassion ;D ;D

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ricncind/1078210564/in/set-72157601355059188/

let's see how the taste test goes tomorrow night [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]

believe it or not, this concoction has made the delicious pea soup that I have been craving for, for the past 30 odd years [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]

I will post the taste test pics Monday after our weekend away [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]

Had a weekend of practicing on my new fire box thingy-ma-jig.

didn't get a peep out of my pie floater post, so will give that a miss.

had the tastiest pizza that I have ever cooked on Friday night.

Sat night tried a mouth watering wholegrain mustard covered Rib-eyed roast and veggies with a delicious  fruit medley/walnut cake for afters.

Tonight, I experimented with the simplest of all dishes.. wedges. covered them in a flour/breadcrumbs/many spices in a  shakebag and like my pizza's, a personal best.

still more practicing to come. not sure what we will cook at the

We certainly do - and simple is many times the best fare.  The recipe is often easier to remember and duplicate.

A bearer of bad news fellas :(

I have to pull out of this planned COG.

Having some bad luck with my work vehicle (courier)

Blew my motor up a month ago, and had a re-built engine fitted.

have had issues with it, and already have had 10 days off work.

That was OK, but the repairer has been beating around the bush and it looks like another week or more off work before being fixed (only have 400k's left of my warranty).

was only taking a day off work to get to Dimboola, but am letting work down enough as it is. (plus my spare cash is dwindling)

I rang dave, and as we were going together, he probably will miss it also.

sorry to miss this, but will have to wait until another time :'( :'(

ps. I blew my engine as we was travelling to a fishing trip with some fishing club mates. (loaded with the bbq/firewood/tarps)

Then there were three..... :-?

Jack! Ya piker!  ;D  It's all good.  Go where the heart says to go...

So we have

Michelb (superstar and boys)
Smokey DK and Rosie (my favourite name cause it's my granddaughters name as well!)
Me n Chris.
Me son and family (including Rosie, Heath and Finn).

If anyone is wanting to head for North as well as Jack, then feel free to do so.  We can always do this another time and place.
If times are tough then lets just postpone and re-schedule.  I'm sure the campsite will be there next year!

So,  big call here.

I'm going to lock this COG in for 2011 for a meet up with the SA crew first week of the school hols.  This time next year.  All OK?  Something to look forward to.
Mexicans V Croweaters.

Who will win?  Camp Ovens at 20 paces   :o

Practice makes perfect....

Spread the word in Victoria and South Australia (maybe Tassie????)

We WILL meet at Horseshoe Bend 2011 September school hols.

Lets make it HUGE!!!!!

You have been warned....... ;)

In all respects for safety and a good time, this COG is now officially postponed until further notice.
For any others reading/interested in this thread the only GOG'ers still going to this are MIchaelB and myself, which sorta defeats the SA/Vic intention.
Stuff happens and if it isn't fire - it's flood!  I think Horseshoe Bend will take some time to dry out even if it is open.

cheers all.  Soon, soon....

we are still keen to make the first SA/Vic COG whenever it happens.

my van issues have been fixed, and we look forward to setting another date. The Dimboola venue suits us fine.

I have spoken to smokey, and we are going to camp on the 25/26/weekend at a favourite camping spot not far from Adelaide.

The vic rains have done us a big favour with the murray river flow.

our camping destination has a lagoon filling fast with the floodwaters flowing in.

We will be with you guys in spirit.
