Title: Swing away?
Post by Smokey Mick on Apr 13th, 2011 at 12:09pm
I'm building a open fire pit in my back yard and I like the idea of a swing away grill for open grilling and also an arm to hang a camp oven on.
The stuff Ive seen around in local camping stores is just too flimsy to hold the weight.
It will be bricked in permanent.
Anyone know where I can find something strong ?
Or will I need to weld it up myself?
I also looked at tripods, Even they were too flimsy for my liking.

SM
weld up your self if you have
the abilities to do so & the gear,
that way you know it's strong.
Also the longer the arm the stronger
it's gotta be, make 2 one on either side
of pit.

They are great over a fire pit.
I will try to get my wife to take some pictures of mine and put up here.
Up above mine I also have a lump of railway iron over  my pit and I made up some sliding heavy duty chain and hook holders to hang ovens off.
My swinging gantry arm came out of an old house, was blacksmith forged, and the owner of the house had thrown it in a waste skip. It is a ripper. Everyone wants to buy it.
The bloke who onns the old house said to me "I don't want that old crap", so I soon snavelled it.

Regards Garry

Smokey Mick here is a pic of one we use, it's heavy so we only use it if away for a couple of days. The post goes into the ground through a plough disc, a collet with a nut & bolt welded you adjust your hight, slide on your arms which have holes drilled near the end. The main round plate has a bolt welded in the centre so you can rotate the plate if it gets a hot spot, the grate sits in a frame made the same so you can rotate it as well. The arm for hanging camp ovens is braced underneath.
