just wondering how the double layers of the ultimate  dutch oven cooker are going...

does it cook to your expectations?
do you use it often?
is it heavy?

Please bear in mind that this is how I personally find the UDO14 the issues that I have might not worry others at all.

It is for me extremely heavy.

The Lid top handle is uneven and does not allow me to use my Mair Lifter.  Anything else I use to lift the lid I can't seem to do it evenly and without the possibility of spilling the beads.  The lid is deep and heavy and doesnt have a deep lip to hold the beads.

I feel it needs far more beads than I use normally and I cant find much information on its use on the net.  What I have found is that a lot only use it with gas.

The bottom trivet is fine but the top layer one needs to be put on very evenly to sit right on the central post.  I find it heavy and difficult to manage this.  I also find lifters tend to stick in the grates.

At Thora I cooked baked chilli chicken wings needing to turn them over half way and I didnt as I wasnt sure I could lift the top layer without spilling the wings to get to the bottom one.  A third layer cooked in my 12" Mulley cooked far better.




It has been suggested that the heat would be better if the top vents were closed off!!!!  I havent tried this.

I bought it primarily as I had seen steamed pork buns done in one and as these are something I make I felt I just had to have one.  I did the pork buns once but wasnt overly happy with it for the above layer problems.

The pluses are the deep lid fits on my Mulley 12" camp oven and fry pan for extra height and I used it for the Spinach and Onion Bread at Thora when I could see the bread mixture was too large for the normal lid.  The deep lid is good for stir fries or pan frying.  You can see the lid at the back of the photo with two Mair lifters not correctly inserted which was how I managed to lift it.





Some do away with the top layer and put a chicken over the central post and I guess you could do a bread or cake without using the top layer but to take it away with all its weight when I could do the same in my normal 12" Mulley wont be an option for me.

You never know till you give things a go and I would have always wondered how it would work if I hadn't bought it.
