Title: Legless
Post by far kin fin on Jun 5th, 2011 at 8:50am
How important are the legs on a campoven? [smiley=helpsmilie.gif]
My mate Mick, who introduced me too co's, said, if you buy one, buy one with legs, so that air can get to the coals underneath.
When we went camping, we cooked with his oven, which has legs. Where we had the fire, it was loose sand, and the legs on his oven sunk into the sand anyway.
I have since bought a co, but a legless one. I have used it 5 times, and everything that i have cooked, has been cooked too perfection every time, barr spuds, that i put in too late on one occasion.
Are the legs there to stop the coals from crushing, due to the weight of the oven? or do they just help aerate the coals? Is there anything I can use to replace the legs when cooking in sand? The last time i  used it on sand i had it sitting on the corners of 3 brick bats.

G'day Jez.   I have made up stands outta horseshoes to sit my legless ovens on otherwise, as you rightly say, they'll put the coals or heatbeads out. Also easier to control the heat, rake the coals in or out as need be.
The big advantage of legless ovens is that they are easier to travel with, I pack a legless 9" inside my 11"  in a specially made aluminium box, never had a broken oven in many miles of outback travel.

Cheers Pd, It's good to know I'm not the only legless one out there!

Is there anymore pro's and cons of being legless? It would be good to hear what others prefer and why?

I personally prefer camp oven's to have reasonably long legs like Metters to allow plenty of room under the pot for the coals to breathe. In contrast my Furphy 15" has such pathetically short  stubby legs, it may just as well be legless.  :-/

I cut the legs of one of my ovens over 25 years ago, they were just useless, far to short. I am still using that oven today, on a regular basis though, and I would do it again if the need arises as I have another just like it still with its legs.

My most used ovens are Chinese Cheapies with out legs.
They are easy to pack inside of one another & handle rough tracks much better.
I do usually sit them on a Trivet made from 2" square mesh.

Cheers, Mick.

This is a pot stand from lodge, but you could use it to put your camp oven on with out legs.  :)
