It's the colours, which "catch" my eye.  They certainly are different from those which come from either the N. Am. rockies, or eastern Apalachians.

The colours are magnificent LK particularly the azure blue rivers and lakes which are mostly of glacial origin. The crystal clear water flows are directly from snow melt and glacial melt and the bright blue colour is caused by glacial flour, a fine sediment which makes the water a bright blue. Lake Tekapo, Wanaka and Hawea are very deep glacial lakes and the color of them can vary dramatically depending on water depth, angle of sunlight and the prevailing light levels. They are especially beautiful when the sun is just partially breaking through a broken cloud layer.   8-)
