Title: Fitzgerald Bay Area
Post by PaganHippyCamper on May 31st, 2012 at 11:06am
we have a favourite spot we go camping at. Totally free, & you can use any car to get there. A 4wd is preferable, but I have a sedan & my car makes it just fine.  :)
It's between Pt Augusta & Whyalla, off the Pt Lowly Rd. Turn off to Fitzgerald bay, & drive as FAR as you can go, before you hit the Army fence. (No access after that spot)
Which is why we have named it Army Bay.

Near the beach, where there is good fishing. Out in the open. No amenities or power, which suit us just fine.  ;D
It's quite possibly my favourite spot!

Is it a recognised campground? How many campsites are there?

Location looks fantastic.

there are camping signs at the entrance to the campsite, it's used by lots of campers. Sometimes you can't get there cos there are other families there.  :-[ The area is quite big, you can get 3 separate camp sites in the one area. And it is all fenced off, which we found perfect when our bigger kids were little. There are probably 30 spots to camp on the way out to Army Bay, but if you wait til you get there, you shouldn't be disappointed.  [smiley=hurray.gif]
I have plenty of photos of the area, but didn't want to post toooooo many of them.  ;)

welcome to the forum PHC.

love whyalla area, but have only stayed there twice in the foreshore caravan park.

went for a drive to look for your camping site, but I don't think I went far enough.

I took this pic of a campsite that you probably would know of. how much further is your campsite ?

Forgot to ask, what sort of fish do you get???

there's a lot of whiting, garfish, squid. (Cuttlefish are banned in this area, it's their breeding grounds) & lots of blue swimmer crabs. Hubby even caught a sting ray once. ;)
There is a family of dolphins that frequent the area daily, & we have video footage of a shark, (unknown species)  ;)

Last I heard [many moons ago] Santos was trying to get the beach shacks shut down/demolished and the whole area fenced off.
Guess they lost that battle   :D

I think Pagan may be talking about Douglas Point (assuming it is still called that).  Although there weren't any actual 'campsites' there at the time, it was a favourite area of mine when I lived in Whyalla - back before Santos/Port Bonython existed.  From memory... it would be about 15 km past the 'toilet & running water' campsite mentioned on this page.   http://www.whyalla.com/page.aspx?u=95

Snip...
Bush camping is available at Fizgerald Bay in three designated areas - two without facilities, and one with 'Windyloos' and running water.

Sixteen kilometres along the Point Lowly/Port Bonython road is the turn-off to Fitzgerald Bay.

At the end of the Fitzgerald Bay road is a T junction where the sealed road becomes a dirt road, if you turn left and travel for approximately 1.8km you will come across the first bush camping area.
This area is fairly basic and without any facilities.

If you continue approximately 1.9km further you will come to the second bush camping area which has toilets and running water.

Alternatively, if you turn right at the T junction and travel for approximately 3.7km it will take you to another basic camping area.
...End Snip

You were almost there! You just gotta keep driving, as far as you can go, before you hit the army fence, & can't go any further. There will be a u-turn spot, the camping area off to the left as you drive down, is the spot we always go. There is bitumen as well as dirt tracks, it's the very last bitumen part, which ends around the corner of Pt Douglas (which is it's 'official' name!)

There are other spots on the way out there, some have a toilet block, but I really love the spot we have named 'Army Bay'

This will be the last camping sign you see.  ;)

Santos will never get the shacks shut down. We all went to a rally to stop anyone closing us down!  :)

let's not forget what Whyalla is famous for .......Snapper Heaven !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and with the money you save on camping fees ????

definately worth the outlay for a fishing charter when in the area.

we went with whyalla fishing charters a few years ago.

Speaking of Whyalla's snapper.... someone posted this on youtube recently.

Things have changed a lot in 30 years but I fairly sure this area is what we used to call the 'basin', near where the BHP shipyards used to be.

bloody ripper of a you-tube LG  [smiley=clap.gif] [smiley=clap.gif] [smiley=clap.gif]

I have always visualised thousands and thousands of big snapper swimming in our gulfs. now the proof is in the pudding.

Yeah, where this vid is made, it's in a total exclusion zone. You aren't allowed anywhere near that area to fish, & the snapper know it!!  ::) Cheeky sods.
It was actually a friend of my Husbands that recorded that video..... they were supposed to be "working". lol
