Title: 44 gal drum oven Post by Mackerel Whisperer on Jul 5th, 2012 at 7:39am
Thought I would share my new cooking device with you good people. I've been looking for a way to take a load off my camp ovens when I have these big cook ups, its been getting too hard to cater 130 head of 5 vegies in camp ovens.
This is what I come up with along with the help of my good mates Brozy & Sly. It will hold about 350 - 400 pieces of veggies. The build and test run. Lots of photos Hope you like it. I love it Cheers Jono |

Fantastic, great job. How many vent holes are in it.

No additional vents at this stage, Just the fill/drain holes. We have the small hole bottom right and the big hole top left. We tried undoing the big hole to let the steam out and it worked fine.

Jono
Using that Picup program to load the imcur images is amazing. When I opened this thread on my iPad all the photos came up instantly. I wish there was a way of installing it for everyone to use. Cheers Derek |

Looks a great set up, particularly if you are catering for a large number of people.

what a rip-snorter of an oven Jono [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]
is one enough for your catering ??? what about a lower trap door to make it easy to renew your coals ? or is one load enough ? maybe also use as a smoker down the track. Brilliant set of photos, well done |

G'Day Rufz
One is enough for now. the trays (3) are 860x400 ish so plenty of room. I will still use many camp ovens on these big gigs. The plan is to just cook all the potatoes in this oven and use campovens for the rest of the veggies. There is no coals in the oven. Its used just like a camp oven over a hot bed of coals. I imagine the food would get way to smokey if I was to use coals inside roasting spuds for 2 hours. and yep have thought about using it as a smoker too. Cheers Jono |

Excellent Jono
Thats takes my 44 gall cooking to a new level. I'll be sending these photos to a mate in Launceston. He's resposible for providing a kitchen for a 7 day camp I hope to cook for in January. Up to 100 men and boys Aart |
