Title: Eastern Rosella Post by Derek on Aug 8th, 2012 at 10:41pm
Snapped this pic this afternoon at a little bird feeder hanging in a tree beside my van. Either a female or juvenile.

Nice one.
Had a Pacific Baza (Crested Hawk) visit the other day. It was a most magnificent bird. Not quick enough to get a photo. Aart |

We have one around home occasionally Aart. The most exciting birds I have at home is a pair of Powerful Owls. Very difficult to get a pic at night but will eventually get a day roosting one when I can find them. Smokeydk wrote on Aug 9th, 2012 at 8:42am:
I will get a pic of the male in next day or so. Much brighter colours for sure. Derek |

Title: Re: Eastern . Have bookmarked the site Post by Derek on Aug 10th, 2012 at 9:01am
Thanks for that Dave. Have book marked the site.
Apart from the Gouldian Finch (which I am yet to see in the wild) I think that rosellas are our most beautiful birds. Derek |

This is a photo I took of a Crimson Rosella at Ebor Falls back in May. I wish I had a longer lens for my camera.
Derek, I was fortunate to see Gouldian Finches in the wild back in about 2004 at a very small out of the way water hole about 60kms out of Darwin. I got photos but it was still in my film days and I haven't got them scanned onto my computer. Jeff IMG_2436.jpg (240 KB | ) |

Yep, a beautiful bird Jeff. I stood and watched a small flock of about a dozen of them feeding last week at Dorrigo but no camera.
When I lived in Darwin I spent as much time as I could around Fogg Dam just south of the city and although many birds in and around the wetlands, there were no Gouldians. I too would like a bigger lens. Only have a 55-250 mm at present. Derek |

I believe the Gouldians have increased in numbers from what they were ten or so years ago and they have been seen closer to Darwin. I was just up there for a two week trip Bowhunting and a local took me to the spot to see some Masks and Longtail Finches and he was even surprised to see the Gouldians. I got to see a lot of finches up close while I was up there and the Crimson Finches were beautiful also.
That photo of the Crimson Rosella was only taken with a 24-70 L lens so it is heavily cropped. Since you have a 55-250mm lens I guess you have a Canon gear like me? My mate just bought the new 70-300mm L lens and I have had a play with it and it is very sharp but still a bit short for taking bird photos. I'm heading out to Cunnamulla in a few weeks so there should be some nice bird life about, there usually is. Jeff |

Jeff, I have the Canon EOS 550D. It came with the 55-250 as well as a 18-55 lens. I also saw the Masks, Longtail and Crimson finches at Fogg Dam. Derek |

It sure is great seeing them in the wild mate.
The 550 is a good camera. I have an older 40D with a 17-40mm and also a 5D II with the 24 -70mm. I would really like to get a longer lens but oh the dollars. ;D Jeff |
