Title: Butesin Picrate Post by Catsy on Aug 26th, 2012 at 11:00pm
Please can any of you out there help me. This product which is used for burns mainly, was readily available on the market up to about 2 years ago, it would have to have been the best product available. I was working at Chrysler trucks at Finsbury in SA when the matron in the sick room introduced me to it, the product was used for burns that were sustained by welding. It ;) ;) :-*anaesthetized the wound, prevented it from blistering and was an all round "good guy for burns" It was made here in Australia. The only negative with it was that it was a bright yellow in colour and would stain. I can't find it anywhere and would love to get my hands on some. If you know where I can get it, or can offer an alternative product that does the same, I would love to hear from you. Regards Carol/Catsy

Hi Catsy
This used to be made by Abbots but I think you will find that they stopped making it because of the side effects. Dermatitis was a big one from memory I use a product called Burnaid myself. Well I have it in the first aid kit but yet to use it . Most emergency services use it these days. Cheers Derek |

Butamben topical has been long discontinued (butesin picrate) because of the high risk of anaphylaxis. Localized skin reactions have been the problem with this topical remedy for many years.
Good 'ol burnaid. I threw it out of my first aid kit long ago and will substitute cool water and vitamin E cream. Burnaid is simply melaleuca oil 40mg/g and I would recommend replacing this with carnacia papaya OR just cool the burn back to skin temperature, cover it to prevent bugs and germs, and get on with life. Any burn larger that a 50c piece area - GET IT LOOKED AT!!!!! Skin graft time here! Welding burns SCAR big time. (Draws deep breath, calming time now, burns are lifelong things like tattoos...) Done.... :) |

Thanks to Derek, Wino and Smokeydk for the information you supplied. I shall ensure that Burn Aid becomes part of my first aid kit - if it's good enough for one of our brave "firies" it is good enough for me. Cheers to the 3 of you. Regards Catsy/Carol

Sorry Catsy, I did go on a bit there and many a "firery" and I have worked together over the 25 years I was a paramedic. I do hope you re-evaluate your decision to stock Burnaid over the "red tube" of pawpaw Ointment. Dave, (smokeydk) may be able to vouch for me here as we have CO'd together. (I wonder if CO'd is an acceptable term?) ;D |

Are we not supposed to seek for doctor’s recommendation first before using any burn creams as initial treatments? Thought we should cool minor burn wounds for 20 minutes in cold water as first aid instead of using any creams. :-/
