Title: Furphy Oven
Post by Chally on Oct 28th, 2012 at 6:16pm
I bought this oven yesterday and thought it was a 12 inch. I wasn't sure what it was worth but I paid $160.00 for it.

I have a few questions about it. What vintage do you think it is? I was thinking it would be from the 1980's as it has the split handle and the writing is the same as on ovens I have seen photos of on here from that era but it lacks the size and year numbers. :-/

What size would it be classed as? I ask as I measured it once I got it home and the lid is 13.5 inches across and the base is 13.25 inches across the top (outside to outside).

Thanks for any help you can give.

Jeff

Thanks for your reply Aart. Attached is a photo of underneath that I took with the others but if you need a better one just say. There isn't any makers marks on the bottom. There is the line where they pour the mould (can't remember what that is called).

Any idea what size it would be classed as?

Thanks

Jeff

Not sure of the spelling..
Sprew  or similar.
I was hoping that there may have been a mark along the lines of KSC   Kangaroo Stove Co..that may have assisted those more informed than me in dating the said CO

Thanks for the info and link David. I remember reading it on here once in one of the threads but had forgotten the name.

Would someone please be able to help this newbie with answers to the questions I have regarding this oven. Thanks.

The trouble with Furphy Jeff is that their history has not been recorded.  It is doubtful that they made camp ovens before the 60's, possibly even the 70's.

To my knowledge and from what I have seen, they made a 12" and 15" with a lid like yours.  Have never heard of or seen one the size you have. At some stage they made a 14" however that was with a Kangaroo Stove mould as Aart stated above.

In saying that Furphy camp ovens are one of the roughest camp ovens you can come across so it is possible a 12" rough mould could come out at a different size.

Like I said it is hard as the history is not available and Furphy have never ever been interested in explaining their history.

Cheers

Hey thanks for your reply Derek. I was really hoping someone would have some answers for me. As I said, I assumed the oven to be a 12 inch but the measurements threw me and I wasn't sure what size it was supposed to be.

I visited the Furphy foundry back in the 1990's and I found the owner (I believe it was the owner or perhaps the manager) to be very rude. Certainly put a damper (no pun intended) on the visit.

Billmans are suspected of making Furphy camp ovens at one stage, but Billmans deny it as have asked them.
So that IS a Furphy!

On my old hard drive (now destroyed by a power surge) I had an email from Furphy stating that Billmans made ovens for them between the time they stopped pouring them at the Shepparton Foundry and when they started making them in China.

It is a shame that someone within Furphy doesn't write the history of the Furphy Camp Oven.

Nelson, could you please measure your Furphy to see if the sizes match the one Jeff has.

Cheers

That was contrary to what they told me???? Before anyone on this site had even made mention of Billmans I placed a large order for a friend for some ovens for his groomsman along with a few for some other mates, and the manager of the foundry at the time was a bloke named John I think from memory and he made mention that they did work for Furphy in the late 90's. Just look at the handles on the lids of Billmans and the later Furphy ovens it's a dead giveaway in my opinion.
Astro.
P.S. doesn't this topic get revisited over and over and over again ::)

Derek

Hi Derek I just put a tape across the top outside to outsise of the base and it is 330 mm

I've found that Furphy lids rarely fit other Furphy ovens of supposedly the same size. In saying that none of my Furphy ovens are identical, ears, legs or lettering on the lids all vary, different molds and probably different foundries.

Thanks very much for doing that Nelson. At 330mm yours is only 6mm smaller in diameter than mine so I guess mine would be classed as a 12 inch also.

Thanks for that info too pd as that certainly seems to be the case. Going by the photos posted on the site by Nelson and others there now seems to be at least five different looking 12 inch Furphy's not including the latest made in China ones.

Folks,

For those of us who are attending the NCOG at Broke may be able to compare a few Furphys and take a few measurements and try a few lids to see what fits what

Also if any of the said people are looking at selling and or swapping any Furphys please let me know as I would be interested

Cheers

As previously stated by Derek and others, you wouldn't buy a Furphy for their quality.
My 14" with the KSC marking has terrible variation in wall thickness.
The 12" I picked up last week has a poor fitting lid.
I only bought them because of the name on the lids.

Getting a bit off track here but from what Ive seen there are two definite size variations in 15 inch Furphys. most of the ovens are 15 inch outside diameter..
However there is another type that has slightly longer legs and it has a 15 inch inside diameter, Ive seen too many the same for it to be put down to just rough casting.
From memory its the one with the type of lid in the photo below.
Nicked this photo out of the history section, I think its Nelsons so maybe he can chime in.

I'm the same, I have always loved them and my lids fit pretty good and their not that rough. My personal favourite id the 10 inch Furphy that's why I have about 5 with all different years stamped on the lid. Gotta love a good Furphy!! :)
