Title: Camper Trailer Post by Derek on Apr 16th, 2013 at 7:52pm
Maggie and I are looking at getting a camper trailer.
In our wanderings we are finding so many places where we would like to spend a few days where it wouldn't be practical to take the caravan. The van will be fantastic for travelling but a camper trailer for those out of way places will be great. Funny how things go in circles. Not that long ago sold the old camper trailer we had but it was rather large and not really suitable for serious off the bitumen stuff. Went for a trip up the beach to Double Island Point a while back. Places like that and Fraser Island will be where we will head. Looking forward to it. |

We started out tenting before deciding we needed more comfort, so we bought a caravan. After a few years we realised that we didn't go camping as often as we used to mainly because the caravan decreased our options. We sold the van and settled on a Jayco wind up. 12 Months on and we're pretty happy with it.
It can be a long journey and somtimes a circular one working out where out best options are. I hope you find yours. (I haven't sold the tent yet either) ;D |

We are still tenting it - dragging a garden variety trailer with our camping gear stored in a large box on the A-frame part of the drawbar.
It does get a bit tiresome if we are moving frequently but suits us down to the ground if staying in one place for long periods. We are however considering a 'tent on wheels' type trailer when the Super comes through in a few years. Wth the built in /slide out kitchen and lots of other mod cons like LED rope lights :D I've seen plenty of the ones that come off the side of the trailer - but I think in our situation it would be better if we got the ones that fold out (click, clack, clunk) to the rear. :-/ From what I've seen the rear fold ones don't require one person to climb over the top of the other with a busting bladder at 3am! I've been to so many camping spots that you cannot get a caravan into but a bit of jiggling will take a camper trailer... so definitly won't go down that pathway ourselves |

Yes, when we decided to get rid of the caravan in favour of more mobility, I wanted to get a camper trailer but the wife preferred the wind up camper. In the interests of matrimonial harmony I took one for the team and went with her preference. We got a second hand "Flite" which is the smallest of the jayco line up. To be honest I think the wife was right (but I don't tell her). It's probably not any heavier than a camper trailer and takes about 5 minutes to erect.
The kitchen was about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike though. I removed it and increased the internal seating. We cook under the awning. I think we'll be keeping this one for a while. When we were looking at camper trailers I was impressed with some of the newer ones. They've progressed well beyond the original tent on a 6x4. |

If you go for a campertrailer (tent trailer) you will need to season the canvas (if aussie built)...there's a lot of Chinese stuff around cheap........cause its made cheap...my CT had 15 ounce canvas was rear over soft floor with a huge annex area 9ft x 18ft

Here is my old one still sitting in the back pages of the website.
http://www.aussiecampovencook.com/homeawayfromhome.htm Next one will be full off road. Dave, some of the Chinese ones that I have seen are far better than the so called genuine Aussie product. In fact a lot of manufacturers here in Australia are getting their tents made in China. Those who do not are charging anything up to ten grand extra for an Aussie made tent which in most cases is from canvas made in China anyway ;) |

Derek.....theres a company here that sell CTs from china flat packed for $1,500 you even bolt the trailer together......I agree the prices of some Aussie manufacturers are too high

I am open to all sorts Dave.
Tell you a funny (well not so funny) story about the Camper Trailer website. Was looking through it one day and saw a trailer advertised the same as mine - Camel Nomad with upgraded semi off road suspension. When I looked at it the buggers had copied all the photos off my website, the ones in the link above. The guys took the advert down for me but was a bit rude I thought. |

There is a few scams going around, they use other peoples photos and claim it is there trailer.
I have had a camper trailer for years, although it has had a couple of reincarnations. It now has a cheap tent from ebay, I have never looked back it works good for me and I have not spent a huge amount of money. The main thing Bonnie and I wanted is it to have a good kitchen, although our older version worked better as a kitchen, but it was just to heavy to tow. http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=1493.275 |

I googled your nisstoyota ? when I saw your reference to it last week. Could you please give us a link to that page and maybe summarise what you did to your vehicle. |

I could post a link on here, I never thought about it, the building my Nisota thread only has 473 posts and 65193 Views though, it takes a bit of reading, as it is up to 37 pages. ::)
I will get a thread with a short version of my nissan, but here is the link to the Nisota. http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=17736 |

Derek, it is not only rude, it is illegal. I have a friend who is a lawyer and he is currently representing a guy whose photos were used by another business on their website. When the lawyer sent them a letter they took them down. But only briefly, then had the hide to put them back up, when they thought the issue had gone. Lazy bugger just did not want to pay for getting his own photos done. Now they are going to be VERY expensive photos.

I have just recently bought myself a Camper Trailer, this one is a hard floor, which is what i've always wanted. Travelling is just myself and my dog, and my daughter when i can convince her to come with me.
Usually i pull the awning from my 4WD and attach the side room, but soon realised that doing that on my own just wasn't working, plus my dog was getting rather cold sleeping on my swag whilst i was warm and cozy inside it, so i opted to buy this Camper Trailer. My first big trip is on Friday 04th December, as the three of us (Yess i convinced my daughter to come) head off to Ayers Rock, and i'm excited. So far i can't fault this Camper, as it seems to go really really well. I asked them to throw away that hitch (the red rubber thing) and i added the DO35 Hitchmaster instead, and i love it!! Quick, easy, simple even my 18yr old can hitch it up all by herself :) smaller_version.jpg (16 KB | ) |
