Title: Who's up for a Campoven Challenge No 2 ?
Post by Rufzgutz on Apr 30th, 2013 at 8:34pm

I, BrianB challenge someone to make a better Chicken based meal than me.

If someone accepts this challenge within 24 hours, the Challenge is on.

(If no member accepts my challenge after 24 hours, any member can nominate another challenge.)

Any number of members can then also challenge to compete for the best Campoven Chicken Meal.

The challenge cooking and entering period will be 7 days from the initial challenge acceptance.

Challenge can be produced in any COCIA cooking utensil using any heat source. ie could even be a jaffle iron on the home gas stove.

Challenge Champion would be decided by a poll of all entries. It's all a bit of fun and no seriousness should be entered into. Stirring each other shall be encouraged.

Challenge Champion will decide the next challenge.

Challengers would need to show a photo or 2 of their finished product and recipe for judging. (No photo editing)

Let the Challenge begin   :) :)

This challenge is to make a dish using "Chicken."
All the dishes are to have Chicken in them.
Now how easy is that.
Come on give it a go. Its easy.  [smiley=chef.gif]

You Are On Baby!!!!   ;D ;D ;D

Oops, we ate our chicken on Sundy
(adds chook to shopping list)

hmm...something tells me normal roast chook isn't going to get me past the winning post.
That bugga brianp is bound to have some trick up his sleeve....

I'm not putting my entry up first this time. Every one seems to copy me.
But then again I'm a bit of a "trendsetter."
Have you noticed my new Avatar that has appeared. Don't know where it came from. ;D ;D ;D ;D
But just see if anyone is game to try and take it off me. 8-) 8-) 8-)

LOL   - Well deserved too babe!

I was going to ring teens ex girlfriend this arvo to see if *she* would design a COCIA crown avatar for us
(she was working though)

You should pop into your profile and change the 'I Love COCIA' to 'MCOR' - until I whup you butt this week   ;)

I think it is hard not to copy 'traditional' Anzac Biscuits recipes.
As Guy Sebastion found out at the World Pop Idol challenge - you don't mess with a classic!

With an ingredient challenge however, we can get as funky as we like !!!   ;D  :D

Maybe we should look at a 'cook off' instead for tied results.

Had a thortie... what if we set a base time for entries to go up?
EG  Entries to be posted after 'blah' time on 'blah' day

That way we don't have one entry up for 5 days and another up for only an hour... or whatever
What does everyone else think?

Steve, if you can beg, borrow or pinch any campoven while your away, cook on top of your stove.

There may be a cocia member close by who could lend you an oven.

We need all the challengers we can muster to knock that cocky champ off his perch  ;D ;D

Where are you on the sunshine Coast?
Do you have a car and how long are you there for?
I'm on night shift at present and will probably cook something for the challenge on Saturday afternoon.
Will PM soon.

The only bloke I have heard use Trendsetters regularly is Mr Rude himself. Are you related Brian ?  :)

Looks like we have a few challengers after Brians title  [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]

I will be cooking Sat night and entering on Sunday.

I was going to poach some eggs (very early stage chicken  ;)) using muffin tins in my campoven, but some blabbermouth opened up a thread from the archives  ;D ;D ;D

It's a good challenge Brian. So many chicken dishes to explore. Mine will be simple but effective.

Let's hope Steve gets a chance to enter. Great gesture Aart.

Steve, you won't get a better chance to gain some invaluable camp oven advice, so beg, borrow or steal a vehicle (just don't tell Aart  :)) and get to meet the Big Fella.

You will be unbeatable at Strathalbyn if he passes on some secrets  :D :D

Looks like there will be a few camp-ovens firing up on the weekend. no-one is giving anything away at the minute.

Don't be shy to put in an entry, even one chicken wing will get you in it.

Would love to see some brand new members having a crack.

Remember, we can't taste it, so presentation and the procedure will be important.

And please, no sob stories like the first challenge..  This is my first time... I'm only new to this style of cooking..... I didn't know it was to be the biggest  :'( :'( :'(

You are all in the Big League now, so suck it in and stop relying on the sympathy/sentimental votes  ;D

By the way, my attempt tomorrow night will be the first time that I have tried this method (with chook)

And smoothzsilk will be entering something that she has not cooked before (with chook)  :)

and a note for smokeydk, plenty of gluten-free chicken recipes out there  ;)

ps. please enter any burnt/failures, as there are plenty of sympathetic voters out there (as proven by the 1st challenge)  ;D ;D ;D

So what are you saying? That people might try using my tactics? :o :o :o :o :o

[/b]ps. please enter any burnt/failures, as there are plenty of sympathetic voters out there (as proven by the 1st challenge)  Grin Grin Grin

So who got the sympathy votes?  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Title: Re: Who's up for a Campoven Challenge No 2 ?
Post by steve on May 4th, 2013 at 3:43pm
I thought the biggest sympathy vote went to the winner as apparently he was first to enter ::) ::) ::) ::)  LG what's the problem with heat beads thought you could use them anywere. All right then I won't tell the voters that this will be the first time I have cooked this dish, or how hard it was to pay for my new cooking device  :'( :'( :'( ;D ;D whoops apparently the neighbours chooks have pet names, we only called ours food type names, looks like I just lost the resourceful vote. ;)

Hahahaha .. Mummy where's Dodgem?  He didn't dodge fast enough and is in steve's pot  :o

Nothing wrong with heat beads steve, just a brain dead city council who decide to restrict camp fires til 10th May
(and a firefighter who needs a lot of 'logical discussion' to turn a blind eye)   ;)

As for the sympathy vote... I sympathise with the friends and family who have to listen to the whines about 'everyone copied me'  sheeesh!     :D

Anybody who wins a camp oven cook-off first time out of the block is not eligible for the sympathy vote!  ;D

[smiley=dankk2.gif] Bonnie...
I think I will make some modifications when I make the Sunshine Chicken again.
Not sure why a person needs to fry raw rice.
Next time I will simply steam the rice as per normal   :)

Yours looks rather yummmmmmm too.
Chief has already put it on his 'I want...' list  [smiley=sun_smiley.gif]

Who would have thought to use Ritz in that way!  Was it because they ran out of breadcrumbs, or were they pisshhht, or a dare to do something unusual with crackers?  Is that how we originally got pavlova... or vegemite!
[brain hurts]

But it was yum.

Sitting outside after stoking up the fire again enjoying sat night jukebox and a few brews.

Soaked my chook in brine today but too nackered to throw it in the campoven tonight.

Nice one, SmoothzSilk!

Finger food is important for sitting back, relaxing with a nice glass of your favourite tipple - that is why they have peanuts on pub bars etc.  I think your little chicken rolls are a perfect little nibble in such a situation.

Has anyone else seen the Boy vs Girl MKR advert?
All this 'I'm the worlds greatest cook' bragging from the men and they can't even get a feed posted up...pffft.  Bloomin slack bums!   :D :D :D

Google parson nose recipes and see if you can come up with something.  ;D ;D ;D

Aart, did you mean that you have smoked drumsticks before ??

Everyone should try these.

My son said he would have preferred sweet chilli. Each to their own tastes.

EDIT : Just thought of something Brian.

I know that you enjoy a rum, so mix the 2 together and come up with Rum's Bum  :D :D :D

:o :o  WOW fellas.... both the chicken pie and the drumsticks look fantastic!

Isn't it amazing how many different things can be done with one ingredient.

Brian... pleeeeeze find something to do with a parsons nose and bundy.  I soooo want to pass on the Rum's Bum recipe to family and see who is game enough.  They don't trust me anymore   :(

Many many moons ago, I visited family and brought with me an esky full of meat from my freezer, cos I didn't trust the lighting plant which had been playing up for weeks  (there wouldn't be anyone around to restart it if it died)

Last time family had seen me I was still wet behind the ears and couldn't even boil an egg.
So they were pretty surprised when I offered to cook dinner

They all loved my steak diane and roast 'turkey'...
til they found out it was kangaroo and bustard!

I should have kept my mouth shut!   [smiley=rofl.gif] [smiley=rofl.gif] [smiley=rofl.gif]

hi fellow competitors, finally got my entry on board. Didn't want to put mine up first to get the tie vote ;).   Wouldn't have even tried this if i was at home, so i'm glad i called into an op shop and brought my latest cooking  tool for $1. Didn't catch the neighbours chook although he does want a lesson on killing them.:-?  I wish all entries could be tasted as so far they all look A1 and will be trying them at some stage ;D. The only problem i have now is my family really know how mad i am. The best outcome for me is doing this challenge with dad on one of his better days. :) :) His words were he has never had a better pie ;D

JC, that rolled chicken breast looks scrumptious!

All these new foods in the supermarkets that I never see during my 15 minute weekly shop...
I must take some time to simply wander up and down the aisles - one day   ::)

Sorry for the confusion...  This is the discussion/sledging/bragging thread  ;D ;D ;D

The one JC linked to is the thread for posting your cooked entry (with photos)
NO chatter is allowed on that one, just the recipe, description, photos of the challenge food

You still have until 9pm (EST) Tuesday evening to enter your dish...
anything you please as long as it involves chicken!   :)

Can't get your photos uploaded?
Post a cry for help... I will be monitoring the thread most of tomorrow (touch wood)

The POLL will run for 3 days - until 9pm (EST) Friday evening

View all the entries and place your vote for who can boast
"My Camp Oven Rules!"   :D

Non-members voting?
Last challenge, with only 3 votes placed at the time, I did open the poll to allow visitors to vote...
mainly because I was promoting the competition heavily on the COCIA facebook page to try and encourage new members to take part in the challenge and entice non-members to the forum.

There would be no point to telling non-members about it if they couldn't take part in the voting process.

It is up to the members to decide if they want the public to be able to vote, then the poll can be set up accordingly.
Express your opinion regarding how you think we should operate   :)

Rufz - the challenge was your idea in the first place - your thoughts?
TBF - you are my 'competition guru' - your thoughts?

Rules for voting?
Because the Poll is a secret ballot nobody knows who voted, nor for whom each person voted, so it would be hard to police any rules laid down about it.   I personally wouldn't/don't vote for myself in competitions - that is just my way of looking at life   ;)

Whether it be members only or open to the public - voting by people who don't have an entry is encouraged.
The challenge is not just for those who take part in the cooking process - it is for everyone to get involved with
It doesn't take long to look at some photos and click a button   :)

Gotta luv the classics!  Can't go wrong with apricot chicken!  Never yet met a person who didn't like it.

Nice little balls, brian   ;D ;D ;D

"Nice Little Balls" They are called Dumplings LG. And I thought they were quite large.

You're right... they do get bigger when they get hot!   :o :o :o

I'm staying out of the ball talk. Last time i made apricot chicken it was with fresh picked fruit, cant beat it. As for voting i didn't vote last time, it was my better half leaning over and voting on her behalf. I personally think the more the merrier. :) :) [smiley=party.gif]

Steve - I have put you in the 'public vote OK' column

Do you still use tinned nectar when you make it with fresh fruit?
I'm thinking fresh would be less sugary, but probably not as juicy?
I have always used tinned nectar and fruit for apricot chicken

Brian - Dumplings have always fascinated me 'cos they don't do what one would expect.
For example, bread is baked in a pan in a dry oven. Leave bread in soup too long and it turns to mush. Pizza is cooked on a hot plate in a dry oven but put too much liquidy toppings on it and it too will turn into much.

Yet we put small dough balls in gravy and instead of turning into mush they get bigger and stay dry!  :D

This challenge series is going along beautifully at the moment. Let's give it one more challenge and see if we want to change/improve things.

LG, you are doing a terrific job so far. Will you add the poll again tonight, please ?

Re: members voting for themselves. If anyone thinks that their own entry deserves their vote, then I can't see why you shouldn't. My last vote didn't go to necessarily to the best entry, but to whom I thought deserved it most.

Each member will have different views on this.

I reckon we are all enjoying the challenge so far, not the competiveness.

LG, I would go for members only voting to simplify things and to gauge what the forumites input is.

BrianB, you would have got my vote if you had went for the Parsons Nose Dish  :) :) :)

You could have purchase some in the chinese shops

Ok Roughie It's Brianp Not BrianB.
I thought about cooking Curried Parson's Noses but decided not to. But maybe I should have at least I would have got your vote. ;D ;D ;D

Yep, I can do the poll again Rufz
Right Oh!  Voting will be for registered forum members only - and you may vote for yourself!

I liked the timing of this one.
Starting on Tuesday gave plenty of time to decide what to cook before the weekend arrived,
plus with a couple of days lee-way for those who weren't free on the weekend.
3 days for voting which is finished before people go away for the next weekend.

This Sunday is Mother's Day (yippee) and lots of people have plans to go away, so I suggest the next challenge not begin until the Tuesday again.   What do others think?

Challenge #2 - Chicken,
The entry thread will now be closed in and the Poll will be available shortly after
Good Luck!

You can all be so very proud of yourselves!

Thank you for participating and making COCIA such a nice place to spend time with like minded people.

You've experimented with new recipes, come up with some very nice meals I am dying to try out for myself, and reminded me of some old favourites which I haven't cooked in such a long time.  Thank You All   :)

Just lodged my vote. It honestly could have went to any of the 8 entries . had to think about this one.

Bloody fantastic in my books  [smiley=chef.gif] [smiley=chef.gif]

Let's all hope that this continues with the gusto shown so far.

A plea to All members again. Please show your support and encourage and join in with a new breed of participants in this Challenge series.

Please vote in the Poll  :D :D :D

Plenty of scope for new ideas/challenges.

''A Blast from the Past'' We could choose from one of the hundreds of tried and proven recipes on
Cocia and see if we can match or better what our respected members have posted.

Guest judges ( There are plenty of past members who could be enticed back to give their verdict on a challenge) even those who have moved over to the dark side (Like baby-Q land) ;D ;D ;D

Put your ideas forward and lets see this prosper.

OMG  the votes are so close it is going to be a very interesting couple of days!

I was too torn so I asked the males to pick 3 each - so along with my 3 choices we could do our own little poll to choose who would get the 'family vote'

Bugger me, every single contestant got 1 vote (8) and the extra was the only one to get 2 votes
So it was almost an 8 way tie!

I've had a thortie Derek...  (hears Chief groan 'oh no, more jobs   ::) )

You know how there is an option to display a poll (or not) when you log on ...
is it possible 50% of the people loggin on have set that option to NO and therefore can't see the challenge poll?

Nope, it will display for everyone UNTIL they turn it off, so everyone logging in after the poll is posted would have seen it once before turning it off.

Freedom of choice to see or not to see :)

The ones who care about this Forum's future have already voted.

Not really sure about the motives of the non voting members   :-/

Plenty of time to press that poll vote button.

But we still have an enthusiastic bunch of members participating to keep the ball rolling.

LG, can we start the next challenge as soon as the Chicken Champ lets us know the next challenge.

But let it run so next weekend (18/19th) is available to cook also. You are good at logistics, so we can leave it to you to set the dates  :) :)

Drama Queen comes to mind   ;D ;D ;D

This is still in the trial stages, so changes are expected.

Geez, I'm waiting for the next challenge to show you blokes/ladies how to use your campovens in the manner to which they are accustomed.  :D :D :D

ps. Should we start a Donut Club section ?

It is inevitable that entries are going to score a donut/zilch/nil/zero with the current voting system.

We could have Derek as the President of the Donut Club (Tall poppy syndrome ??) as he is the sole member at the minute  ;D ;D ;D

But serious, we could have a bit of fun as we all at one stage will join the Donut club.

Watcha reckon ?

RE: Challenge #3 timing
Assuming your ladies are happy with their pressies (you DID get them something, right?) and you survive this weekend...

Let's make it you can cook as soon as the Chicken Champ informs us of the next challenge,
and have until Tuesday, 21st May, to post your entry

Some people can't cook on weekends so this way they have a couple of days before and a couple of days after the wekend.   Then voting can occur over the Wednesday-Thursday-Friday again.
