Title: Snowy Mountains COG - Talbingo or Tumut Area - It Is On Post by Derek on Jul 9th, 2013 at 6:35pm
Weekend of 2 & 3 November 2013. and some days either side of it.
Mark this date in your diary if you want to join us in a camp oven gathering on the Western lower slopes of the Snowy Mountains in November. There will be a small contingent of us from Queensland travelling down at this stage. Aart has just told me he has leave approved. We are yet to make a definite decision on actually where however will be in the general vicinity of Talbingo or Tumut. Will be an area where caravans can be towed and where we can have a fire. Stay tuned for further information. ;) |

Things have gone quiet on this COG, is it still on ? I've mentioned it to all my CO friends (3) and they are keen to go.
Has the exact site been decided on, Talbingo or Tumut. pd |

Yep it is still on.
PD, do you know the area??? I was hoping to get down there last week on my trip to the snow to check out a few areas to camp but time didn't let me. Can you recommend a site??? |

Many years since I've been thru there Derek. The "Camps Australia Wide 5" book doesn't mention Talbingo and shows the two camps at Tumut as day use rest areas, maybe Lady J can tell us more.

Looks like the Jounama Creek Camping Area near Talbingo in the Kosciosko National Park may be the place.
Read about it here - http://www.wildwalks.com/camping-in-nsw-parks/south-coast-and-highlands-campsite... Free to camp, no park fees and will take caravans for those amongst us who need some comfort. Being National Park we will need to carry all wood in with us but if everyone brings some then we should be ok. Denis sent me these pics. He may be able to tell us more. What are your thoughts?????? |

Hi,Jounama creek camping ground is app. 8 klms from Talbingo where all services are available [except a Dr.].Three dams are available.jounama dam can be fished.but no boats allowed. Blowering and Talbingo dam has great fishing, boats can be used on these dams. Tumut [our home town] is 40 klms on the Snowy Mountains Highway in one direction.in the other direction 40 klms has you in the high country with many things to see.

Derek
Just going through the dates for the Snowy COG so I and the bride can see if we can attend. One thing we must look at is the 1st October NSW Fire bans that come into force regardless of weather conditions. I am sure we would not be allowed to light fires or the park might also be closed if the conditions are too dry and fire risk is high. We should monitor this closely and perhaps get a more local person to check out park rules in relation to fire bans. Muzz |

Just checked it out on a website "cut and paste"
The Bush Fire Danger Period The statutory Bush Fire Danger Period runs from October 1st to March 31st, however it may vary due to local conditions. If you are planning to light a fire in the open during this time, you will need a permit. Depending on the type of fire, a permit may be required all year round or only during the Bush Fire Danger Period. For example, a Fire Permit is required at all times if a fire is likely to be dangerous to a building. Aart |

Have just sent an email to the folks at Tumut National Parks Office who sent me the original information.
See what comes back. Maggie and I will be there regardless I think. Cheers |

We won't suffer for lack on numbers, I know of six other couples not connected with COCIA who are keen to come and have a look.
Looking forward to it, we'll be there Thursday hopefully. Rob. |

Getting close now. If you haven't yet made plans then start today.
For thos coming or planning to come here is the link to NSW Rural Fire Service with details of fire bans. I see Tumut and the Southern Slopes are currently in the green so looking good. http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/dsp_TOBAN_HTML.cfm |

With the fire bans recently it wasn't looking good for the COG.
Received the email below today following an enquiry I made. Still looks ok Quote:

I spoke to a friend last night who is camped on a private property at Talbingo, she was saying it is very green there with no fire risk but of course things can change.
If things go belly up we will cook on gas, no big deal. Wooohooo only a couple of weeks to go. pd |

G'day Derek.
Chris and I were pretty keen to attend, its been a while. Intended continuing on to Sale to visit my sister (long time no see) but it turns out they will be in SA buying yet another vintage tractor, which is their hobby. So considering the 2&1/2 day trip down, present weather conditions, things to do on the van before next years WA goldfields trip, have decided we wont get to this COG. To those who do go, have a good safe trip with plenty of (as per usual!) CO tucker and suitable beverages to go with it. :) Will be looking for pics with familiar faces. mikel |

Disapointed we won't see you there Michael. No doubt our paths will cross one day :) Have delayed our departure 24 hours until Tuesday. Our real estate agent is going to hold a couple of open houses while we are away so spent today prettying the place up. |

Thoughts I had of cancelling our trip to Talbingo because of the terrible fires in the Blue Mountains are gone, it's raining in Sydney this Monday morning. Yesterday morning visibility was poor here because of the smoke haze but today looks good so I'll continue packing with the plan of leaving here Thursday, see you there.
