Title: Diggers Fire Starter Smokeless Gel
Post by Derek on May 2nd, 2014 at 2:47pm
When we were at Broke for the COG I became very interested in how different people got their Heat Beads going.

We all used chimneys of various design.

I used fire lighters, some used a gas burner and others used metho in a burner or small tin.  I concluded that for convenience of carriage and the fact of no smoke I would change from using fire lighters, which can be very smoky, to metho.

Got myself a little tin to stick under the chimney and have been doing that ever since.

Was in Bunnings yesterday and wondering through the BBQ section and spied this on a shelf. Diggers Fire Starter Smokeless Gel.  It is based on ethanol.

Third of a cup in my little burner tin and it works wonders.

$5.95 a bottle.

Well I've used everything, (except napalm) gels and special blocks of coconut fibre etc and I always come back to my reliable gas ring however I will try that stuff Derek.

I use teabags which I dry and then put in a jar of metho

I have a stock of pyramid pieces of wood I get from the local timber yard ( cut from pieces of 2X2 used to make stakes for concrete layers ) They are good  because of  airflow .

6 teabags , handful of pyramids , light ( easy because of the metho ) heat beads and away we go

will buy some diggers fire starter to replace metho

my only problem is getting teabags as I will only use loose leaf tea   ;)

Just spent half an hour mucking.

Photo 1 - all the gear to get going. I put 25 Heat beads in the chimney
Photo 2 - a small amount, around 1/3 of a cup in the little tin and light
Photo 3 - can see how much I have used
Photo 4 - after half an hour great hot coals

No smoke and no smell.

As an addition to this, as you all know it has been pretty darned cold around south east Queensland lately so we have been lighting the fire at home.

Have been using a handful of kindling and about 1/3 of a cup of Diggers and it is the best thing ever.

I doubt I will be buying fire lighters again
