Real nice Brett!
I would put money on it that you're still grinning ear to ear. My Falkirk is the smaller 12 inch with a patterned lid. As you can see "Falkirk" is very indistinct on my example I'm thinking that the more ornate(?) patterned pieces are likely older, when labour costs were less. Carron are another example where this can be noticed IMG_3426a.jpg (245 KB | ) |

Great oven grump thanks for the photo and history as I think you nailed it when working out the ages of the 2 ovens , I have been smiling all day as the mail man dropped an oven off I got in Forbes last week and on opening the box there was a lid with crap all over it so I give it a little rub here and here and bugger me there was the brand and size Falkirk 18inch on it 😄😄😄 but it didn't have the pattern on lid like your beauty mate(I wish it did ) I will try and upload photos tonight ,

I can't see your photo either KD.
That 18 incher is a beauty Brett. Those big ovens make average size ones look small. :) Jeff |

Title: Re: Falkirk Camp Oven Post by BGW71 on May 17th, 2014 at 7:06pm
Hey Chally they do make them look small as that is the 14 inch Falkirk beside it , I put abit of wine in them and lite a heap of candles around them put on some real smooth music turned all the lights off in the shed last night and left them all alone hoping to get up in the morning to find one like grumps and you would believe it there must be a bit of cross breed in 1 as I did get 1 like grumps but it was a metters 10 inch :D :D ;D gee it's a little beauty mate

Brett, that image is an old one before stripping the gawd-awful paint that came with it. It took an age to remove. I have used it a couple of times, way back. The pans and such get much more use on the stove. That 18 inch is too much; what a beauty! |

Title: Re: Falkirk Camp Oven Post by BGW71 on May 18th, 2014 at 8:48pm
Hi grump
I got a 16 inch no name which was painted pot belly black ,when I got it I fell in love but by the time I got the paint of there was no love left I can tell you . Cleaning the 18 up now and will post when done . I keep looking at the pattern on your oven lid as I never seen 1 like it and can not get over the work that went into it |

Title: Re: Falkirk Camp Oven Post by Saltbush Bill on May 18th, 2014 at 10:07pm
BGW , Both ovens are rippers. That big Falkirk is nice and deep, just the thing for doing really big roasts. The depth and shape remind me a lot of my 20 inch Carron. Its interesting that the 14 incher doesnt seem to have the same depth in relation to its size.
Maybe its an earlier or later model from the range they produced back then. You may find the following of interest. Quote: "Falkirk Iron Co was established in 1819 as a Joint Stock Company. The company had its origins in the Falkirk Foundry Co which was set up in 1810 by 'by some gentlemen of the area', employing former Carron Company workers as overseers." |

Hi SB
Thanks for posting info as it is all history that is coming to the surface for newbies like me to read and share down the track and so some reason there are people that seems to keep it to themselves not sure why . There is a big difference between the 14 and 18 inch and I am not sure if it's the right match as the lid just does not sit right , it could be abit of grime or something that is holding it up as it looks like it should fit , what is your thoughts on this do you think that there is a chance that it's a mix match ? Can you post a photo of your 20 inch carron as it would be good to see 1 . Cheers Brett |

http://www.falkirkcommunitytrust.org/heritage/learning/resources-for-schools/docs/schools/industry/Working%20in%20the%20ironfounding%20industries.pdf
Check this link out Brett it has a bit of background on the Falkirk iron works. The thing is with the history of some of these foundries is that the majority are no longer in operation, and unless there is some information on the internet about them, it can be hard to find out anything at all. I'm not sure that your comment about members that use the site are reluctant to share information about the history of camp ovens is right, as I believe we have a pretty informative history section thus far, considering how hard it can be to obtain any information about foundries that have long since closed down. If you have a look through the history section there is a lot of historical information available to us all on camp ovens thankfully to members sharing any information they have come across. It's a work in profess that I'm sure will only continue to grow over the coming years :) Astro. |

Sorry Astro
If you read my post to robbo you and the members should know that it was not meant for the forum . There is a lack of info to source on the net and also when I emailed furphys in trying to find out bits and pieces they never had the time to even reply . Sorry if you took it the wrong way |

Title: Re: Falkirk Camp Oven Post by astroboy on May 19th, 2014 at 8:56pm
No mate not at all :) just pointing out that there some good info already on here. My advice regarding Furphy don't waste your time and energy ;D

Title: Re: Falkirk Camp Oven Post by BGW71 on May 19th, 2014 at 9:33pm
Yeah mate I picked that up after the third email , having just as much luck with RM Williams . As my reply to robbo the forum is a book of history as I found with the info and photos that Has been posted on the Falkirk for all to see . There is one thing I would like to see posted if you don't mind is the old furphy price list with the little cast iron kangaroo boiler I had as this is something that more than likely to be the last of its kind more so than the boiler .
Thanks for info on the Falkirk very interesting read for us all Brett |

Title: Re: Falkirk Camp Oven Post by Derek on May 19th, 2014 at 9:57pm
Brett, I think Furphy wrote us off when we exposed them in around 2005/6 for getting their camp ovens made in China which they had failed to tell anyone.
There are a lot of people out there who believe they have a genuine Furphy camp oven that has in fact been made in China. |

Nice link Dave, I found the bit about the "Carronade" pretty interesting, I wasn't aware that Carron was into firearms back in those days.
BGW there is quite a bit of information on both the Carron and Falkirk foundries out there if you google the names. Ive got a bit of a collection of it here on my computer and one day given the time shall post some of it up in the history section. Like Dave Im a little confused by your comment of people not sharing what they know. I think most people on this forum are only two happy to share what they know about camp ovens in general, including history. As for your lid being a mis-match... :-/ I wouldnt like to say one way or the other. Bit hard to tell from a photo. Here is a photo of my Carron before I cleaned it up and seasoned it, Its deeper than most ovens of the same diameter, that's why I commented on yours. |

From what I understand we are the only forum out there that has an interest in the history of camp ovens but boy has it been difficult to find.
Even our own Aussie camp ovens history has been difficult to track down. |

Derek it's a bit sad that furphys has wiped the forum as it's a big part of history .
Astro thanks for looking into the price list as it would be good to read it SB , not sure what to say mate but I was not talking about the members as my reply to Astros but reading it again I can see how it read , I have googled the names of came ovens which always comes up with a post on the forum which has answered a lot of questions , It is unreal to email the likes of furphys and a few others not to get a reply off the people that should have the history of there product . I am very greatful on the info which you put up about the Falkirk , the reason I asked about the mix match is that I have emailed Chally saying that I had doubts the it is a match as it just does not look right and when I read your post I was hoping you seen something to put it to rest . I can't be leave the info that has come to light about the Falkirk which again I will say this forum is a open book on history which Derek and all members have put together. Brett |

From memory the " History section " started from this.
VicStar wrote on Jan 15th, 2009 at 3:25pm:
From what I can find Derek set the section up on Jan 18th, 2009 , I think all things considered we have done well to get as much information as we have in that time. Lets hope that it continues to grow in coming years. |

Title: Re: Falkirk Camp Oven Post by BGW71 on May 21st, 2014 at 9:56pm
There is enough newbies coming on board to show that it is going to be around for awhile .
I am still getting my head around the different styles of ovens Which have been made in the same foundry and furphy I think no 1 will know every thing about them |
