Title: By Jum.Buck this is good
Post by Rufzgutz on Dec 28th, 2014 at 9:55pm
Used a BabyQ last week and was very happy with what it does.

Nearly bit the bullet, but my natural tight-arse instincts steered me towards a cheaper version.

Very happy with its performance today with its light weight and ability to cook a sausage sizzle in breezy conditions.

It uses a throw away gas canister but can buy a gas hose down the track.

I won't recommend it yet until further testing, but it seems to be a bloody ripper.

Couple of pics from today and some links.

Not sure whether the Tuffs would be allowed to mix with the Toffs?  ;

Only ate 2 snags Dr Shackles  :-* and on white bread  :o

I do sneak the occasional sausage also at Bunnings  :)

I always thought it was mandatory to have a sausage when you go to Bunnings.

Kinda like a gold coin donation entry fee thingy.  :-/

Will try some chicken breast for the next cook.

We have a Weber BabyQ in the caravan because of it's size a versatility but I have always said that they are not the be all to end all of BBQ's.

This is my Everdure that we had for our last van and which now gets used at home at least three times a week,  It was half the price of the Weber when I bought it.

Geez, I am well and truly outnumbered here by the Toffs  ;D

Not sure if this Jumbuck will allow me to bake in it, as on low setting, the temp stays around 200 degrees. ( maybe leave a gap in the lid?

I will experiment during these hot summer months.

Who remembers the old pommie comics?  :D

Yeah Rufz, but I didn't get the side table thingies with my Q... they are optional extras.  The accessories with the Q could soon run up a hefty bell I reckon.

Too right there Seamus. Plenty of accessories to choose from.

http://www.weberbbq.com.au/Accessories.php

$60 for side tables and I got mine included  :P

I have to buy my connecting hose, where at least yours is supplied.

Time will tell whether I should have opened the purse strings a bit more  :)

The BabyQ is a quality product by the looks.

In both my Everdure and Weber I find that is a pretty good temp for baking most things especially meats.

I'm a 180 degree man for just about everything, but I will soon see about the higher temp.

Seamus, you better fork out for the side tables, otherwise your xxxx gold's are gunna fall straight to the ground  :D ;D  ;D

Had oysters kilpatrick, some Chicken spinach and pinenut sausages (for tomorrow's picnic) and a couple of filo parcels filled with chicken tenderloins, spinach, ricotta cheese, & mushrooms

Did the job for a very nice meal.

That all looks pretty awesome mate.

I see most Barbecues Galore no longer stock Webers and are pushing  their own brand of Zeigler & Brown.  They also look to be going to give Weber a nudge on the market.

I think all these little BBQ's are pretty good once you get the hang of them.

I don't have my trivets or other gadgets to experiment with 'till I get home, but my cake tin was useful.

I will try baking a fruit and nut cake soon, but from experience, I need to keep the temps down so it doesn't come out a rock cake  :)

It's good to have a generous miner son $$$$$$$$

Now getting back to me Jumbuck, I'm in lurve  :-* :-*

Cooked some Chicken breast and a couple of steaks for dinner tonight  [smiley=chef.gif]

Baked a fruit&nut gourmet cake afterwards and could not be happier  [smiley=bounce.gif] [smiley=bounce.gif]

The seasoned chicken is my signature award winning family dish and it exceeded my expectations.

A couple of screwdrivers under the lid allowed me to bake my gourmet cake @ 180 degrees and once again, a perfect dish.

I soaked the sliced chicken breast in olive oil and rolled in a seasoned flour (whole meal plus vegeta stock powder)

Tried the same with one steak and it turned out OK.

The other steak was cooked with just a little seasoning.

The steaks were not too bad, but the chicken breast was very tender and moist [smiley=chef.gif]

Used an oven bag for the leg. About 2hrs @ 200 degrees for the leg. A bit less for the veggies.

This thing will pay for itself on this holiday.

Our unit has a stovetop but no oven, so no going out for dinner when you can enjoy better food at home  [smiley=chef.gif]

With the gas usage, I left it connected so it could have leaked a little  :-/

Only have small servings Dr Shackles  :), truly  :D

The leg was trimmed of most fat, sweet potato and potato baked with a little olive oil, and a Big serving of green mint peas.

And the cake is whole meal flour, dried fruit, banana, coconut, unsalted mixed nuts and low fat milk, and a naughty bit of milo  :D :D

Surely, Dr Shackles, You can't deny me a few of life's little luxuries  ;D ;D

The Boss has decreed that we will be having a roast done in the Baby Q for lunch so I'll be sure to get a couple of pics.  I have a lamb leg, piece of pork or an uncured piece of brisket from which to choose.  I'm favouring the brisket so you can bet it will be either one of the other two when I have the choice made for me  ;) ;)

The Monsoon seems to be with us... finally ... so it might be a carport job I think.

Saves watering the new vegie patches 'tho.

Baked a King George Whiting this arvo  [smiley=chef.gif]

No filleting, no scaling, just gutted and placed on foil to save cleaning the plate.

Ate straight from the foil. Yum bloody yum.

Baked a couple of small mackerel fish also. Most people throw them back because they are boney, but baked and the meat picked out they were OK.

Down here, these are not often kept.

When I was a kid used to catch dozens of them and yep we do get them up here in Qld.

When I was 16 I had a bloke in Sydney make me a very light fishing rod and used to use 2 pond breaking strain line and a German DAM reel to catch them. Great little sport fish  :)

Never eaten them but fantastic bait whole for large fish and as a cut bait for just about anything.

By the way, nice looking whiting.  King George is still one I am yet to catch.

King George is our Premier fish down here Derek.

My personal best is 48cm and I have seen a 65cm on a fishing forum.

The one I cooked today was 33cm (legal size 31cm)

Not much to catching them. You just gotta find them  :D

Rick, looks good.

Have a look at this photo of a Weber Baby Q.

It shows the aluminium convection tray with a baking trivet sitting on top which are both Weber accessories

Would work well in your Jum Buck.

Still in love with my Jumbuck  :-* :-*

I bought a pkt of medium weber trays Derek. The jumbuck is larger than the babyq .

Works brilliantly. I did a beef roast and spuds this week. Perfect  [smiley=chef.gif]

Have used it a few times this week.

Used the weber YouTube to help me cook my Atlantic salmon to perfection.

I will take some pics tomorrow to show my adaptions that allows my 10" campoven to be used in it.

I have also bought a gas hose to make it more fuel efficient at home.

I've got to say that our new Baby Q has been earning its keep during the arrival of our belated wet season this past weeknor so.  We've done two pork roasts inside a week the crackling has been so good.  Even our cat, Munchkin, gnawed away on a piece of it, which is quite unusual as he never, ever bothers us of a mealtime.

Another 3 inches of rain last night and just waiting to see if this low up on the tip of the cape crosses into the Gulf and turns into a cyclone.  Then we WILL get some rain.

Twice I have tried to impress others with my jumbuck and failed  :'( :)

Took it to my BIL's BBQ to show how it works and burnt the sausages  :D

Had my sons over tonight and was going to BBQ some chicken thighs coated in seasoned flour.

Bloody gas wouldn't work. Tried a couple of different bottles. Must be because I have been cleaning it by giving a pressured squirt with the garden hose.

Must have water in the pipes and jets  ::)

Hillbilly frying pan came to the rescue inside  :)

Not sure if Bunnings have Sales.

The regular price is $129.

I later bought a gas hose and a reducer for about $30.

I can now use a portable gas canister or a 9kg or smaller gas bottle.

I still need to get the gas flame lower to get the temp down for baking.

Enjoyed some tender bbq'ed steak last night and then tried baking a cake.

It was ready in 1/2 hr and turned out looking something like a pudding  ;D

By putting a mesh plate down lower to the flame, I can fit a 10" campoven inside it.

I took pleasure in stirring up BabyQ users in the past.

Eating humble pie now. The bees neez, ducks gutz, these BBQ ovens are Brilliant.

I now see why everyone raves on about the food cooked in these BBQ's.

I baked some sweet potato and normal potato wedges the other night.

In around 15 mins they were some of the best wedges I have done.

Still learning, still burning a few things now and then, but this is so versatile and easy to use.

I still squirt it to clean it, but direct the hose away from the jets now.

If I didn't already have so much outdoor cooking/BBQ'ing gear I may consider getting one. A mate invited us around for turkey done in his Weber Q and it was extremely tasty. It was done with no basting or seasoning of any sort and could not have been better. As Derek says, the Baby Q is very popular with the grey nomads. We just do not have the room for one in our compact motorhome, as the camp oven takes preference.

I have had no problems with the GM 110 gas hose.

Can't help you out with your problem, but Google is  your friend  :)

When I bought my jumbuck in a country bunnings store, the staff couldn't help me with my hose selection.

Back in the city I was asking a staff member about the type of hose and they had these in stock.

Still love my jumbuck, but not using as much in the winter months.

A couple of nights ago, I did grill some frozen barramundi and once again cooked to perfection  :)

I bought a pizza stone with a stand and a cutter today at Bunnings.

Perfect fit in the Jumbuck  [smiley=clap.gif]

Cooked pizzas tonight and I have said it before, but I love this little outfit.

I think the regular price is now $99 for the jumbuck Orion and I have been tempted to buy another one and leave it at Port Lincoln.

If you have any Father's Day money left over, you can't go wrong with one of these bbq's

The weather is warming up, and the jumbuck is coming out to play more often now.

Had both sons over for dinner last night and the night before.

Pizzas using low sodium mission wraps as a base take only 3-4 minutes to cook on the pizza stone.

Baked 4 whole King George Whiting and served them with salads.

Tonight we enjoyed baked spuds cooked on the pizza stone which worked a treat.

Going back to the blocked gas hose, I did come across this problem a month ago. Not sure what caused it, but maybe something to do with starting heat beads on top of the gas burners  :D

I put my mouth over the gas inlet on the BBQ and did what the big bad wolf did  ;D

It worked after that  :)

Two Large Roast chickens Sun (41 deg in Adelaide)

Both cooked so tender in my outdoor kitchen [smiley=drool5.gif] [smiley=drool5.gif]

Sat inside in A/C comfort while the jumbuck did it's magic.

I got rid of my 6 burner and 4 burner bbqs after getting my jumbuck.

What brand of BBQ is that Rolly? Looks similar but not the same as an Orion.

Was that $60 for the spit? I have an ozspit, so can't justify buying another one.

Aart, spot on about summer bbq'ing.

Have been trying a few things lately. First time doing beer can chicken.

Cooking these as I write.

Drumsticks were tender, but dry crispy skin.

Cake was easy. Might have to be my dec challenge entry.

I was referring to your BBQ in the background Rolly.

The spit would be a jumbuck coming from Bunnings.

How do you keep the heatbeads from falling down  ;D ;D

My beer can chicken was as good as I have ever cooked chicken.very juicy.

Cooked a couple more tonight in a roasting dish. Good, but not as good as the beer can.

A boneless leg of lamb and a turkey roll in the jumbuck tomorrow morning.

39 degrees for Xmas Day tomorrow. A/C comfort inside while the jumbuck roasts away outside  :)

Should go well with our leg ham, prawns and oysters  [smiley=drool5.gif] [smiley=drool5.gif] [smiley=drool5.gif]

Cooked my lamb and turkey roll, but lamb was tough for some reason?

Slow roasted for 3 hrs. Maybe the vertical slicing, being boneless.

Must learn what slicing with the grain is all about.

Turkey roll is foolproof cooking in the foil and turned out just right.

Luckily the ham, prawns and oysters was all we really needed.

I was talking about your vertical spit Rolly

I have seen some recent photos in Facebook Land of a certain "chicken skin eater", that made me skin my drumsticks tonight  :)

Brushed them with a marinade of olive oil, lemon juice, Worcestershire, sweet chilli, chilli flakes, maple syrup, paprika and pepper.

I could add a foil tray down low to prevent the charring, but they added to the taste.

I reckon even Deano would be happy with these  :D

Not dry like the skin on drumsticks, so I have found a new frugal favourite food.

I usually use a marinade of a mix of soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger and sesame oil for chicken drumsticks and wings.

I am still on the lookout for one of those holders.

My BIL offered me his unwanted spit assembly and I jumped at it.

Fitted it to my older jumbuck and gave it a test run today

I don't often cook pork, but this little roast came up pretty good.

I slow cooked for 3 hrs before thinking about covering the top with alfoil.

Brought the lid temp up from 150 to just over 200 degrees.

Will experiment with a s/s cover next time.

Might get some crackle if I do that. But this one was good because I just cut off the fat.

For $99 + $22 for a hose, you can't go wrong with one of these units.

Cooked the tenderest roast leg lamb today ever.

3 & 1/2 hrs on low setting, the last hour with gas bottle throttled right down and raised the lid a little to get the temp down to around 180.

Cooked in an oven bag which held all of the juices and flavour in. The jumbuck is high enough that the oven bag doesn't touch the sides and burn.

I have never carved a leg of lamb like this before. I could have used a butter knife.

Not very good photos, but should give an idea.

And the last photo is of the ribeye steak cooked in the jumbuck last week. (Posted elsewhere)

The best bit of meat that both of us have ever eaten.

Taking my jumbuck on a caravan holiday this week, so hope to enjoy some more tasty feeds.

That lamb looks really, really yummy.  Doesn't get any better.

You are right about the better cuts of beef.  I have for quite some time now been addicted to the sirloin steaks from Aldi.  They come cryovaced with two steaks in each pack and are around $27 a kilo.  Even sliced for a stir fry or Thai curry they are great.

The beauty is for us travelling is that the use by date can be anything up to a month away and I am sure that the longer you keep them the tenderer they get.

I wanted the lamb tender, as we were having lamb & gravy rolls for an easy meal for 7 adults.

I like buying aged meat from the butcher, so use by dates are a benefit for me  :)

Roasted a large chook tonight in the caravan park. Foil container didn't fit, so a bit of squashing was required.
