Title: Identifying a Simpson Camp Oven?
Post by Mike234 on Jul 25th, 2016 at 8:28pm
Hi All, I've viewed the site many times but have finally decided to create an account and start my first post.

Anyway, I picked up a nice old camp oven recently, and after cleaning it I discovered a name on the lid.

I believe it says Simpson, but I'm not sure.

If anyone could help provide some info on the oven I'd be very grateful as I can't find any Simpson camp ovens to compare it to.

Here is a clearer pic of the stamp off mine.

Thanks for that Kingbrown

Do you know how old or rare they are? I've struggled to find any information on them at all

A few Simpsons I have seen also have the Simpson name/ logo right in the middle of the
under side of the oven.
They are not terribly rare, there are many ovens that are harder to find or buy.

Thanks for the info SBB. I didn't see a name anywhere else on the pot, but it could easily get rubbed off from use.

Do you think they are about the same rarity/value as Metters and Albion ovens?

It's just that I've seen and heard about a few other brands of ovens in displays and on ebay etc., but I've never seen a cast iron Simpson camp oven for sale, only the Simpson bedouries

Welcome to the forum Mike. To me the Simpson ovens are not as well cast as a Metters or Albion oven. As for purely collector value I would say they would be similar to a 12" Metters.

Cheers Chally. I do agree that the cast doesn't appear to be anywhere as good as the few Albions/Murphys etc I've seen.

First I thought was damaged, but after closer inspection I found that it was just mistakes in the cast.

I guess the quality control was fairly slack

Yeah mate I have seen some pretty rough Simpson ovens but I have also seen Furphy ovens that were worse.

They are certainly roughly cast, I own a 12" incher where the bottom of the base is quite uneven suggesting that sections of the base may have been joined in piecemeal manner. However having said that the roughness does not detract from them being an excellent cooking pot. :)

Just to agree with a couple of the above posts, I have a Simpson and the casting leaves a bit to be desired, wall thickness varies from thick to thin and the lid is only a rough fit. Only keep it so I can say, "Yep, I've got one".

Hi Mike, that is a genuine nice, usable  oven.

Perhaps a cold pour Stump? Any chance of an image? I have seen similar on a couple of cast iron pieces.
Also on a Douglas shaper; it looked like a flowing crack but cracks don't operate that way, do they.
