Title: Millmerran 2016 Post by poddy dodger on Oct 1st, 2016 at 7:50pm
In no way am I claiming credit but in previous years I have eMailed the committee of the Millmerran Camp Oven Festival and abused them for being lousy with the prizes and the cheap souvenir ovens they had on on sale.
Remember the year they had Chinese camp ovens with little aluminium plates pop riveted to lid stamped with Millmerran 2012 or was it 2010 ? Maybe it was earlier than that KB. Prior festival to that they had aluminium lids on cast iron bases, very cheap and nasty ! Well this year they have what look like quite decent souvenir ovens for sale, I don't know about the prices, maybe someone out there knows ? Rob. |

They are made by Larges Foundry in Toowoomba. Last Festival and the one before that were the same but they were not cheap from memory.
Jeff is up there somewhere so no doubt he will have more info. I remember those ones with the little plates pop riveted on them. They were Chinese Furphy ovens as well. |

There wasn't a lot of difference in price, from memory the 10's were about $230, 14's $295....12's somewhere in the middle. Rolly got lucky and found one with a small blemish and knocked them down on the price a bit. |

Here are a few photos that I took while there. It was a bigger event than I imagined.
At one stage I was talking to the head cook in the area that feeds everybody out of the huge ovens. He told me that they had used all of the meat that they had bought for both Saturday and Sunday by late Saturday afternoon. 600kgs of it to be exact. At that stage they where ringing around trying to find a butcher to deliver more meat so that they could feed people on Sunday. There are a lot of interesting things going on at once at this festival. Poets and singers on stage, Demonstrations by Blacksmiths, Rope Makers, Wheelwrights doing their thing and other old trades. I'll defiantly be going back again and would like to see if next time we can get a team together from this forum to cook in the comp. Ovens of a different type The biggest cast iron frying pan Ive ever seen, made in Germany apparently and still available if you can find where they are sold. It looked bigger than a 24 inch oven by a fair bit. |

It seems impossible to find out the cooking competition results.
Nothing on ACOF FB page or ACOF website, I do know the Gidgee Gang from Townsville were runners up. Anybody got the results please? KD |
